I think that the main negative of the 4S since the release of the iPhone 5 is less because "old and obsolete", but because they are not made in capacities greater than 16GB. Granted that it's a significant improvement over the the previous generation (max of 8GB), and quite serviceable if you do not put much media in your device but to me, that's the biggest negative.

I'm not sure where you get your figures from as 16GB has been available since the very first iPhone, and 64GB available since the 4S?

It might still be possible to source 4S in capacities larger than 16GB from various places (although stock will undoubtedly dry out sooner or later), but officially, they are now only available in 16GB. Similarly when the 4S was released the 4 was only made available with a measly 8GB.
