Sounds like a terrible idea.
Firstly, from a quick use of the search function, neither DVD maker and Media Centre are included on Win 8 (my version at least). Then, things like PowerShell and XPS Viewer provide compatibility and are hardly bloatware. Would you really rather have people in the position where their colleague has sent them an attachment and they can't open it because they accidentally didn't get the XPS Viewer?
More than that - however what relevance does this have to the thread?
I only upgraded to windows 8 as I got it for the reduced price of £24.99. If it was priced at £80+ I would have gave it a wide berth.
I also grabbed the media centre freebie as well to give back the PVR functionality.
As for windows 8, you get used to it and I find its fast and flows great from one thing to another and even the 3 and 4 year olds here love to use it and can load it up and play angry birds star wars.
How to make Windows 8 usable for people who aren't touch-obsessed:
1 - Bypass Modern UI
2 - Restore start menu
3 - Tweak Explorer
4 - Profit
No need for a "???" step.
I'm wondering how many of those 'sales' belong to platforms other than the desktop/laptop space. I wonder if they include tablets as well (hence lack of solid Surface sales figures).
I got a copy for a relatives machine. If you want a start menu, then you can always add one if possible. TBH,for basic usage just pin the most used applications to the start page or the quick launch bar at the bottom of the desktop.
just like every government on this sad planet Microsoft is well known to lie on how much they sell in an effort to get people to think they gotta have it cause everyone else has it, its the oldest trick in their book. its just plain junk and the only way they will sell it is when its a in a new pc or other product , ill bet most of those sales are in systems not bought yet or in a phone.
Again, it's not a general recommendation, it's mainly for power users who dislike all/most features of the new UI.
Disabling/minimizing Ribbon, restoring the status bar with full file usage information, optionally replacing the shell, but that comes at the cost of losing certain features, etc.
But again, it's not for regular users.
Supplies believe Microsoft are telly porkies about the sales figures, as there sales are dwindling.
Therefore if true it must be the upgrade crowd at home. I bought one licence for home, but not upgrading my two other PCs yet... still debating whether I like it or not.
It's certainly growing on me.......although the funniest thing is that my best experience with it so far has been an RDP session to Windows 8 from my Samsung galaxy Tab using the Wyse pocket cloud app.
Proper touch screen experience does make the UI better.
Unfortunately, doing anything properly productive was harder without a real keyboard and mouse.
Makes me think you really do need all 3 input devices to truly fly around Windows 8.
