They'll be getting one more from me when I'm able to upgrade from next week
Quite right, they've given the press meaningless information. I wish this type of news would fail to make the cut for publishing until the numbers provided can be substantiated.A fourfold increase in sales compared to Windows Phone 7 sounds pretty good but might not actually be that impressive – we simply don’t know the numbers.
I'm interested in them - not played with one yet - but I am pretty happy with my Gnex right now (so much so I couldn't really justify an N4). It would be nice to have a change with the next phone..
There's a lovely dilbert cartoon on this, which includes a line something like "Are you expecting a room full of engineers to be excited about a large percentage increase over a very small baseline?" This could be the difference between 10 million and 40 million units, but it could equally be the difference between 100 and 400
edit: ahha, found it http://dilbert.com/strips/comic/2008-04-19/

I'm just biting my fist trying to stop myself from getting a WP7.5 phone! Since I've waited this long, I may as well wait a little longer and get a WP8 device.

Should be pretty decent numbers. Nokia sold 1.2 Million Lumias in Q4 2011, and that was with the 800 only available in 5 European countries and the 710 only available in the US and only on T-Mobile. Add on HTC Radar and Titan sales worldwide and presumably "four times the sales" means they've cleared 5 million WP8 handsets in a month? Not world breaking, but certainly not bad.
Anecdotally, a friend that has had iphones since the 3gs or earlier, recently replaced his iPhone 4s with an iPhone 5. Which he then got rid of and got a Lumia 920 which he is far more impressed by.
Maybe Microsoft might be starting to build the momentum they are desperate for. A 3rd competitor in the market is never a bad thing but I still couldn't care less how they do TBH.
