I'm hoping there will be a way to buy the 64GB edition, rip it open and smack in a 256GB OCZ.

Hopefully that should be possible. With the drop in SSd prices MS should have offerd this option of a larger drive in the first place..

If the battery life cant last an entire day then the whole thing is pretty much pointless.
I'm not expecting an entire day of battery life, but something more than 4.5 hours is desirable...
I doubt it will be "user serviceable" to that extent, some sacrifice to make it so small and thin, this thing is thinner than the average Ultrabook but contains all the same stuff except a keyboard.
If it's not soldered on then the SSD will surely be mSATA rather than 1.8"/2.5", it might be accessible along with the RAM but I suspect small chance as I suspect most things will be soldered on like any other tablet, it's been necessary to achieve the form factor.
This isn't really comparable to ARM based tablets, it's in a different league in terms of performance and utility. Microsoft have done a pretty good job to get it to 4.5-6 hours of battery with that chassis, there isn't a CPU with the power characteristics to do better until Haswell turns up. Think of the Surface Pro as a lightweight Ultrabook and the battery life looks pretty good considering all other Ultrabooks are much heavier and thicker to achieve their longer battery life.
As with most computing devices you have to balance up power/portability/utility/battery according to needs and there are loads of devices out there to find the one that fits you, one man's "useless" is another man's "perfect".
4.5 hours would be fine for me, I very rarely (if ever) spend more than that time nowhere near a wall socket and constantly using a device. I usually keep spare chargers for all my gear in the office, so I can top-up if needed. A Surface Pro is the jack of all trades I could use on the sofa, on the train, in the datacentre, standing, sitting, wherever. I might wait for a Haswell version, what could swing it is if reviews say it gets too hot to hold... my current Dell Netbooky thing gets too hot for my lap often and it's pretty annoying.
If those are prices we can reasonably expect to see here, then it's top end price-wise but just about okay.
But they won't be, most likely. We'll get stuffed for 1:1 $:£ as usual, I fear
