I would have thought the original terms that you signed up on had some clause in there which gives them the right to adjust the terms in some way.

Let's face it, one way or another, all these businesses are just that - businesses. So they're out to make money. No problem with that. It's just that some of them go out of their way to appear to not be doing that, at least until they have a large enough userbase.
