I should have mentioned, midrange laptops!! Oops!! I don't think desktop SKUs are affected.
There is also noise(at least from SA) that Intel is trying to also think of locking out PCI-E graphics cards, in the next few years,at least from lower end SKUs.
Re: News - Intel Haswell processors to launch on 2nd June
yeah more like £250+ for an upgrade .. shame really intel still gets away with milking the crowd
Re: News - Intel Haswell processors to launch on 2nd June
So is this official yet, or just recycling stuff other sites have said?
I don't get the hostility here, the graphics don't hurt anyone, when not in use it won't draw any power.
Yeah so it's slightly more expensive than older i5s, that's not Intel, that's just inflation.
It might be £250 for an upgrade, but it would cost me basically the same to upgrade to Sandy or Ivy.
Re: News - Intel Haswell processors to launch on 2nd June
I think i will give Haswell a miss and focus my money on the GTX 780. My 2600k is keeping me happy, probably for the next 4 years. Haswell is not really a big enough jump like it was for me when I jumped from the Q9450 to SB. Such a difference.

I for one miss the fun and value of overclockable Celerons and Pentium. Still remember the Celeron E1200 (1.6GHz) machine I built a a few years ago and it's been running at 2.4GHz (+66%) since then on a cheap mootherboard without ever crashing. My current Pentium E5300 (2.6Ghz) easily clocks to +35% with almost no effort.
Cheap Core2 Celerons tended to overclock really well and easily: whether the die was harvested with parts fused off or where Intel uses a custom die having far less cache tends to mean far less heat too. That E1200 Celeron is nice and cool with the stock fan & heatsink which is not something commonly seen with 2500K etc.
Are you saying that with Ivy Bridge chips FSB overclocking doesn't work or doesn't work well? I know its easier with the K model just to increase the mutlipler but I didn't think increasing the FSB would cause any harm, especially on non K chips?
Re: News - Intel Haswell processors to launch on 2nd June
There's only a very limited amount you can turn it up before you hit system instability, it controls a load of other clocks besides the CPU cores.
Re: News - Intel Haswell processors to launch on 2nd June
Haswell will be a good deal more power efficient than Ivy Bridge - even if a variant has a higher TDP, it does not mean it will use more power in use. Should be a great advantage for laptops/ultrabooks/tablets.
On the desktop side it should be both faster and cooler - but perhaps not as essential an upgrade.
Re: News - Intel Haswell processors to launch on 2nd June
If you have an SB or IB chip, no, Haswell ain't worth the upgrade. If you are anything older, though, Haswell is probably going to be worth it just for the power efficiency gains, meaning more OC headroom.
It also doesn't hurt that a i7 920 from almost 6 years ago with a modest overclock still doesn't get pushed in any games (hell, a q6600 will almost never get maxed). Any title that would have a budget big enough to put pressure on it is already cross platform and crippled by 8 year old consoles.
Re: News - Intel Haswell processors to launch on 2nd June
Hmmm - Still got a Q6700 which is starting to get a bit flaky (random HD issues but that might just be one of the HDs failing). Just wondering if Haswell will be the upgrade I finally take... to be honest i'm almost tempted to just get a cheap replacement motherboard and invest the cash in a new GPU. I'm not sure the Q6700 gets stretched much even now.
Re: News - Intel Haswell processors to launch on 2nd June
Is Kaveri expected on 2/28nm, then? Will it still be FM" coming so soon after Richland?
Re: News - Intel Haswell processors to launch on 2nd June
Another new socket ... you kidding me ?
People's motherboards become obsolete so quickly!
Still remember when I bought P67 last year and it was all the hype!
Socket 775 = P4 / Pentium D / C2D / Quad
Socket 1156 = i3/i5/i7
Socket 1155 = i3/i5/i7
Socket 2011 = i3/i5/i7
And, now Socket G3 = i3/i5/i7
Am I the only who thinks we are being ripped off ?
Re: News - Intel Haswell processors to launch on 2nd June
P67 has been around for two (!) years at this point.
No native USB3 and shoddy SATA6 would make 1150 an attractive offering in comparison.

Nope - but they did tell us in advance... which makes it okay (!)
...I'm looking forward to the Haswell launch, because I'd like an i5 / i7 to upgrade my current setup before it's completely obsolete.
Good integrated graphics mean that I might finally get my parents to upgrade too!

I know you mean P67 has no native USB3 and shoddy SATA6 - but just for those who don't - 1150 hopefully has a good amount of SATA 6gbs/ III

AMD FX8350 only £140 in most places. And as a bonus you get a room heater thrown in too. Planning to upgrade my X3 720 to the FX8350 this month.
Re: News - Intel Haswell processors to launch on 2nd June
Another slot eh...
I think I will stick with my 3770k, no matter how much I love overclocking I cant do another slot only 5 months after upgrading my mobo
Re: News - Intel Haswell processors to launch on 2nd June
If it will drop into my Z68 board I may be tempted for some overclocking fun :)
