Re: News - Slide-to-unlock patent win for Apple

What Apple were granted is a DESIGN Patent, not a regular Patent. A Design Patent only covers for identical designs; others cannot use a bar with the text 'slide to unlock' in it with a moveable right-pointing arrow. It does not cover other methods of unlocking that involve a moving UI element.

The second patent, that looks identical to the N9/Lumia 800/900/920. Sigh.

Re: News - Slide-to-unlock patent win for Apple

The thing that gets me is: screens are getting larger, whilst phones try to stay as small as possible. as a result, a rectangle shape containing nothing but screen is not only the logical conclusion, but the ONLY possible one considering those trends.
How can you patent a design where there is no alternative even physically possible?

And regarding the second patent: we simply need to invalidate every single existing software patent, then have a debate on whether there should even be a replacement for them (IMHO: no)

Or "Slide-to-unlock .. your bank account"

Interesting throwaway comment by someone I know here. The slide is left to right, which not only disenfranchises left-handed people, but also Arabic, Hebrew, etc speakers - who may naturally prefer right-to-left.

On the other hand, the approach taken by others - in my case Samsung - where you just need to do a screen swipe gesture in any direction is more ... inclusive.

Are you kidding? There's tonnes of completely unpatented medieval inventions to rip off!

Maybe next they'll patent witch burnings, only substitute witches for pirates to make it more novel and modern.

"Witch burnings" are just sooo medieval - Apple's Ministry of Truth (you know the one that insists that Apple invented the MP3 player, smartphone and tablet amongst other things) will probably "adjust" that to point out that it's a "game changing and innovating" way of reducing the prison population. "iJail is smaller, lighter and thinner and makes handling difficult fellons so much easier - just a quick dust every so often"

(sorry, am in a particularly foul mood atm).
