maybe they`ve gone back to HDDVD as there own format?

Bring back the 52 in 1 game cart!
Aside from being arrogant, it's also too broad a statement to mean anything. Are we talking future as in next few years i.e. when this console will exist, or 10, 30, 50 years down the line? 'I'm right regardless of what anyone else says and no-one else's opinion matters' is extremely unhelpful and rude.
I doubt it. I suppose it's possible they could use it, or something similar, for games, but why hinder usefulness purely in attempt to revive an obsolete standard? Saying that, if they're really willing to forgo physical media playback, a proprietary format might help to deter physical pirate copies of games and avoid licensing costs as is the case with the Nintendo.
Of course they are skipping blu-ray. Its a SONY product which although is the only option for HD / 3D films, it isn't that much of a game changer for many.
Only 1 in 10 households in my area have a blu-ray player if the PS3 is excluded from devices (accoring to a local technology mag- reliability is so so). If you look at the sale of DVD's vs' blu-rays you will find the DVD market is still massively stronger.
Simply blu-ray isnt needed to deliver the quality most people want. DVD Player = Cheaper, therefore Microsoft = Smarter.
Poor Sony missing out on the tiny share of sales it would have received from every xbox if it did have the blu-ray installed, something like $2.90 if the PS3 is anything to go by.
Alright, don't rub it in![]()
<edit> I was about to make a tasteless comparison, but thought better against it. Ahem.
Also, bluray might be a Sony creation, but it's also the industry standard in hi-def disc media. For Microsoft not to use it would be foolish. I know so many people who bought a PS3 as their bluray player, and seeing as it's also a games console this is what they stuck with. Microsoft would lose a lot of money by not including it in their design.
There is a lot speculation going on about a rumour. I do hope the real announcement comes soon. 20th March is it?
Yeah, not using it purely out of spite seems a bit childish even for MS. Not that I'd put it past them...
I don't think they are avoiding it for that reason. Spite is too petty. More likely they have considered the cost / benefit and found that the cost is outweiging the potential increase in sales. It won't be used as a gaming media for a long time.
If most people who wanted a blu-ray player opted for a PS3, then those people will still have their PS3. Just now they will (hopefull in MS' eyes) also have a shiny new Xbox720 next to it.
But it's not just about BD video playback. As has been pointed out, developers are already pressed right up against a capacity wall on DVD. MS recently changed how DRM is implemented on the discs, freeing up another few hundred MB of space and it was immediately used by developers. Sure, you have the option of multiple discs, but it seems developers would rather forgo a bit of content to squeeze the game onto a single disc rather than part-fill a second one, as we've seen time and time again on PS3 vs 360 releases. The size of new games means we're likely to see a great deal of them being forced to use multiple discs, although it could be less of a problem if they can be installed and, for example, only the first disc is playable so you don't have to switch discs despite installation like we currently have to do - another problem being an awful lot of content is duplicated across the discs, and so needlessly installed twice to the HDD. Forza 3 is one example of current games doing something the better way - only the first disc is playable, the second disc contains more content, but only needs to be used to install the extra content.
The PS3 is *horrendously* inefficient as a BD video player, and the newer consoles are meant to have had some consideration put into idle power use, so would be the better ones to watch films on if you already own both generations. Not that that is likely to be a big incentive for MS to include BD playback, but it would be better for consumers and their power bills.
Oops, double post

A drive used for installs only, games will not play from it, so if they're not needed after the install then that suggests a unique key of some sort is used otherwise you'd pass the disc around all of your mates. That suggests MS can indeed 'block' games if they so wish (commercial suicide, but possible)Durango consoles will have a Blu-Ray disc drive...
commercial pressure for not reselling games - EA want the money not ` game`
Well yes, I'd be suprised if there wasn't some form of payment/transfer system for used games on both consoles, indeed Sony have the RFID patent however I would imagine that would be so easily hacked it wouldn't even be funny.
As others have stated elsewhere I'd probably be up for going the no-preowned route if games were significantly cheaper as a result, after all Steam pretty much does that. However I don't see that happening.

There a few possible conclusions to draw from that. First, it makes good technical/practical sense to avoid needing the disc in to play it, but the downsides are obviously related to how DRM is implemented. This implies having a net connection will be mandatory even for single-player games, even if it's only for initial 'registration', otherwise it would be possible to pass a disc around to a load of consoles, installing it on each one. The ID could be some sort of printed key like we have now for DLC, or some sort of disc tag.
However, it's possible (maybe not likely) that they could have a system to de-register keys so users can sell games, maybe with some reasonable time limit between activations for obvious reasons.
As for Steam, the games are nearly always far more expensive on release, only dropping after some time, and often only cheaper than retail versions in sales.
