It's pretty much the same for PS4, because they've both switched to x86 from other CPU architectures there is no code compatibility and apparently they felt emulation would just be too slow/expensive/crap.

Sony have mentioned a streaming service rather like OnLive for people to play PS3 games on the PS4 but I suspect just using a PS3 is probably a far better thing to do unless you're super starved for room and HDMI sockets. It's also likely that both consoles will get popular items from the back catalogue ported as downloadables...

Plus a streaming service for PS4 to play old games carries the kind of always-on internet requirement that people are bemoaning the XBox One for so I can't see it being that popular, unless those people are massive hypocrites...

Backwards compatibility in a games console always struck me as a minor thing, if you still want to play the old games then the old consoles (or the Slim special edition that always comes out like this) are dead cheap by the time the next gen is launched and can just be retained, there is very little second hand value in the last-gen machine to make it worth selling... Besides most console games are so throwaway with limited replay value.

Surely the PS3 will live on for quite a few years to come.

That's been mentioned in a lot of places - e.g. here. Although I get the distinct impression it's streamed as in remote storage of the app, rather than run remotely and the IO portions done locally (OnLive)

No, no, no. Speaking as one of those "hypocrites" there's a world of difference. The PS4 streaming of old games only requires an internet connection while you're using it, otherwise if you just want to play GT6 (or whatever) then you can go "off grid" if you desire. On the other hand MS's attitude is "unless you connect at least once a day then your £400 console becomes a £50 DVD player".

It's a minor issue for you, but other people with larger libraries of oft-played games would disagree. The point about the cost/resale of the older consoles though is one I'd agree with. Or conversely, why not "reward" Microsoft for it's lack of support for it's loyal fans and ignore the XBone altogether? Consensus in the YT comments I've seen are that a lot of folks are either defecting to PS4 or PC - e.g. check out Xbox One: Angry Rant Pt. 2. There's also been some talk of how the extra power in the XBone could "easily" be used to provide an XB360 emulation if MS had a commercial reason to do so - I don't have enough knowledge to say either way, but if it's not technically possible then surely why not just say so?

I'm also not the best person to agree about the longevity of console games - but that's a personal foible. I'm currently replaying Just Cause 2 ffs!

The Xbox 360 will not have updated requirements to match the Xbox One. In fact, Microsoft stated that if you don't like the requirements of the Xbox One, to buy an Xbox 360.

You mean your £400 console becomes a £400 DVD player.

Assuming that proves out, that may be an option, if I ever need to replace my current XB360.
