Got my Acer Ao751h from 8 to 8.1 and as far as things go, it doesn't change much. You can tidy up your Start Screen with the new tile sizes, and a nice new addition is the ability to boot directly to the desktop. The Start button at the corner will still take you to the Start Screen, so it is nothing but aesthetics, it was always there, just without the good'n'old Windows icon. My only trouble now is purely hardware related: oh, that Intel GMA500...

    8.1 is still preview isn't it ?
Mind you I've quite got used to W8, but would like to boot direct to desktop.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Yeah still preview.....although the people who are expecting the start button to bring back the feel of 7 are going to be disappointed. Its more to enhance the Windows 8 UI.

Because that is what the unknowing masses will do. With all the reading that I have done, I find it odd that nothing of the sort was mentioned.

I totally disagree or you just wrote it incorrectly. Windows 98SE yes people stood with it for a long time but once w2k pro was released everyone jumped there in few years. XP was seen as W2k ME a total failure... just after SP2 it was ok but before that its a joke. Windows Vista had stability but it was complete redesign of all data and a lot of trash typical failure of Microsoft like XP was. Windows 7 was a breakthrough though it was only optimized vista with few patches - but it was 100x better than anyth previously. The win8 looses on desktop market since it was designed for tablet and mobile devices. PC's aren't... you do not expect some ****ty mobile interface on pc system... that was so far fetched it looks almost like it was bill gates idea.

Re: News - Microsoft Windows 8 limps past Vista market share

I don't have any objection to Win 8. But my main PC's motherboard has no Win 8 driver support, so I'll be staying on Win 7 until either, Asus release Win 8 drivers for socket 1366 boards or I do a major upgrade on my PC. And given the current price of ivy bridge enthusiast, that isn't going to be any time soon.

Installed 8.1 on an old laptop, think its 2 Gb of ram and an ssd. Works surprisingly well, for my laptop use the metro / desktop layouts works nicely. Will probably get the full version when its released. Only one driver issue and that was just a case of grabbing an old version and doing a manual driver update.

Re: News - Microsoft Windows 8 limps past Vista market share

Windows 8 is fine... I suppose. I'm using it, but only because the £25 upgrade was essentially a copy of Win 7 with a slightly redundant front end (if you're using mouse and keyboard). Still a bargain.

At full price, I wouldn't even consider it.

Actually I'm going to agree with the post you replied to. Based on personal experience I didn't see a lot of Windows 2000 uptake - although the folks who did go for it, raved about it. XP hoovered up a LOT of the previous users - and to describe XP as a "total failure" doesn't seem to be born out by anyone's statistics.

Vista is/was one of those marmite OS's - either you liked it or hated it. The overwhelming majority of folks I ran across (in work or socially) loathed it with a passion and jumped to 7 at the first opportunity because - as someone said to me - "there's no way it can be any worse!". Although the same commentator also claimed to like 7 quite a lot - saying that it was "that Vista s**t done how it should've been in the first place". A lot of the folks in the office - me included - went XP->Vista mainly because it seemed to have some strange app incompatibilities - ones that didn't occur with the same apps on '7 for lord knows what reason.

Best comment I heard on '8 was ... I would've liked Windows 8 more if I'd liked Windows 7 less which pretty much sums up my view too. That said, when the rig gets rebuilt with it's new processor/motherboard then I dare say I'll "downgrade" to 8 too. But - in true Microsoft tradition - not until the first SP is available (Windows 8.1).

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...
