    Monitor 1st!

    then...

    GPU's
    CPU
    GPU
    SSD

    all cost 200-250 GBP

then some way down after that

    Case
    Ram
    Blu-ray rw
    Keyboard etc

Was the VDU worth it? Hell yeah! 2560x1600 will keep my gfx looking great during gaming for many moons to come. It's a god send when using Visual Studio/SSMS too!

Re: Features - QOTW: What's the most expensive component in your PC?

Usually it's the graphics card. I tend to buy something close to the top of the tree, and run it until it dies/no longer competes (years, usually). I think it was worth it at that time. Although it's a weak card today, it was a pretty big leap forward in its day. We've just had three series of Nvidia cards in a row whose x50Ti-and-up cards are all capable of giving you a fantastic experience at 1080p, so until the next gen really gets going, the best buying strategy has changed. Still, if I had the money to sink on a 780 today I'd do it in a heartbeat, safe in the knowledge that that card is going to be excellent for years to come.

I've just added in a cheap card to replace a dying GTX280, so now it's a toss-up between the CPU, the motherboard or the hard drives, all of which were in the same ball park when I bought them.

Monitor, by a long way and yes. Dell 3007WFP 30" 2560x1600. Now approaching 6 years old, and it's still on par with the best on offer today. Meanwhile the 8600GT powering it is only about 5% the performance of a similar card today!

Re: Features - QOTW: What's the most expensive component in your PC?

that depends on whether you take prices from when they were bought or with depreciation....
buying price wise, my Q6600 definitely takes the cake.

lol it's my case but you got to love http://www.ldcooling.com/
    and then water cooling loop
but really theres not much in it between them ..
after that it's just the parts inside to make em shine

you see you change whats inside but last case I had for 13 yrs
and water cooling just needs a change in blocks ..
What does it matter now if men believe or no?

Re: Features - QOTW: What's the most expensive component in your PC?

CPU and GPU, about equal cost. Both well worth it though, going from top end stuff from my last big rebuild three years ago to top end stuff now is a lot of fun.

Core 2 Duo T9800.. Yes, I am a PC gamer stuck on a laptop that old. And yes, it was worth it. The extra juice lets me struggle through BF3 on low at 800x480.

Re: Features - QOTW: What's the most expensive component in your PC?

Gotta be the GPUs at something like £700 a pop, though they're laptop GTX 680Ms so it's almost fair enough. After that, monitor at nearly £400, again worth it for 2560x1440. Then SSDs and so on. Tbh my next big machine won't be a laptop so I guess in hindsight it wasn't worth it. Mid-range laptop and a high end desktop folks, that's the way to play it. Unfortunately there wasn't anything quite right when I was looking
