Why not just switch user and keep their session logged in in the background?

No switch user option. Running XP Professional. Besides, I hate to think how slow they would go once logged in if there was a switch user option!

My machine at work is the slowest in the building, being a creaky HP sporting an Athlon XP 3200 and 1gb of ram. Running an email client and a modern browser brings it to it's knees, and don't even mention the odd time I need to start Illustrator CS4.

Did I mention that one of my (many) job roles is IT (senior).. and I can't get authorized to buy myself a new machine. All the office staffers that look at spreadsheets are running 27" iMacs with i7 920s (over Citrix because hey, none of their programs run on OSX)

Companies the world over underfund, underestimate, and completely ignore their IT staffs direction and wisdom.

Yes yes, $2500 iMacs that can't run our software for everyone else, but no $500 pc for me.
