Re: Features - QOTW: Are you upgrading to Windows 8.1?

Yep, opened the Windows Store and it was right there so I proceeded to download and install it. Took a few restarts and it was there.

Haven't noticed any bugs or any faults that it's left.

New features do I do like:
-Start menu having the same background as desktop so it seems more "integrated" rather than a completely separate screen.
-Clicking the file explorer link now leads to "This PC" which shows your library folders + HDDs in one window, again I like the integration.
-SkyDrive is fully integrated with file explorer so it's really quick to use now, perfect for multiple devices on the same windows ID.
-Boot to desktop, they really should have had this from the beginning but it's nice to finally have it. Pressing the Enter or Windows key wasn't difficult though.

All in all, I wasn't a hater of W8 but I'm not a power user either so I'm happy with 8.1.

EDIT: One thing that I noticed went missing is the WEI - Unfortunately it's been removed with 8.1 and although it wasn't the most accurate, it was good as an initial/rough troubleshooter in seeing if the GPU was running properly and also for a quick comparison in stores.

I did it and will probably have it clear everything and start fresh with 8.1.

Yes, it's probably enough but I can't be bothered after spending pointless hours trying to learn Windows 8 and rolled back to Windows 7

upgrade went quick, the new search is pretty awesome, some of the settings menus make more sense now. i like the new feel for the shortcuts in the start menu.

Re: Features - QOTW: Are you upgrading to Windows 8.1?

Cant fault it, both upgrades have gone smoothly (desktop and laptop), only thing I say is I wish Microsoft would provide a different method for upgrading because regardless of the bandwidth I have (not an issue) i had to download two copies for the same task, would have prefered to just download 1 and upgrade at the same time and the windows store lacks a fricking estimated time so I wont lie it took longer to download than expected.

Good stuff so far? It seems faster, I cant explain it but it just does feel better and the start screen is quicker since I was experencing some issue with it no idea why it did but it lagged for the last 2 fifth of it, fixed now and better than when it was working .

Love the new background integration, its a very small but a very good step to reducing the start screen distraction.
Search, brilliant its back to windows 7 but with major improvements and a web search, cant fault it and I would side with it being at least onpar with ubuntu latest version that went live the same day
Resolution, display looks better no idea why just remember to go to screen resolution and click make text and other items larger or smaller then tick the box "let me choose one scaling level for all my displays), this fixed all my blurry text, now its prefect!

Boot to desktop, brilliant setting that should have always been there but better late then never.

When windows are all closed instead of bringing up start screen you can now set it to just stay to the desktop, brilliant .

Can now turn off the charms and recent apps side bars, very handing as to be fair I dont generally make use of them.

No other issues or anything to report as of yet, havent had a major run through yet to be fair but I would say well done Microsoft, they clearly have listened to user feedback, 90% of the general problems with windows 8 have been resolved and everything else has been improved be it on the backend or the frontend.

Re: Features - QOTW: Are you upgrading to Windows 8.1?

I upgraded an old Vista laptop (2007) to 8.1 via 8. I picked up win8 pro upgrade from Tesco for £50, fitted an old generation SSD, installed win8 pro (no hassle doing a fresh install), had to run updates before 8.1 appeared, then did the 8.1 update. SO far seems great, for an oldish laptop its very responsive (ssd bbig factor there), and I actually quiet like flipping to the Metro for emails, etc. I do have it set to start on desktop.
I will not be upgrading my win7 desktop, but would probably go win8.1 for any future builds. I have not seen any downsides that would put me off using it on a newbuild. Which reminds me must update wifes win8 laptop to 8.1.

Re: Features - QOTW: Are you upgrading to Windows 8.1?

Upgrade went fine though the very annoying swipe with your finger to switch app hint that appeared actually took some googling to figure out how to make it go away. I don't have a touch screen and incase it happens to you the solution is put the mouse cursor in the top left corner.....
Very pleased that the search (windows key + ?????) is actually working more like windows 7 rather than in windows 8 :-)

Re: Features - QOTW: Are you upgrading to Windows 8.1?

I updated on the day, midday lol. I had a couple of problems, crashed on boot at first after install, but this sorted itself out after four boots. I also had to re-install TuneUp Utilities 2014, even though it had updated to be 8.1 compatible, and verify my Steam games for them to launch without crashing as soon as it loaded. Now all of that is out of the way I definitely prefer 8.1 to 8.

Not until I have full desktop like I currently have with Windows 7. I know there are third party type apps out there that allow this but would prefer if Microsoft did actually do a dedicated version.

I just hope us Windows 7 users, especially gamers don't get forced into it by holding back newer versions of DirectX

I would be surprised if Microsoft doesn't try to do this. I'm glad 8.1 brings much needed features to Windows 8, but I'm sticking with 7 until there's a compelling reason to change.

Most service packs tend to be, in my experience.

I can't begin to imagine the comments in here if MS had the nerve to charge Windows 8 users for it.

Not until I buy a new computer. The one I have won't even install Windows 8.1.
