I'll take your word for the ping limitations, but as you yourself note - the problem is overloaded servers, not a crappy console. This doesn't really affect me to any extent because - like Leety McLeet - whenever I've Halo'd/CoD'd/BF3'd on the console it's been like being back at school (and not in a good way).
Then again BF3 on the Xbox really, really, really ... , really stunk - even with the 4 tonne anchors of Battlelog and Origin, the PC version is just light centuries ahead.

Halo I never really "got" - certainly not to the "best game evah" extent that some shout it up. Forza though, and some of the PS3 exclusives, would be pretty nice to have on "proper" hardware.

Maybe, just maybe, the closeness of these next gen consoles to PC's will mean there's more likelihood of "console exclusives" making the platform jump. Nice thought to end on.

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

The PC is quite clearly for casual gamers. Which is fine - Peggle, PvZ, Osmos etc. are great

lol that might be true, but that'll be because there are MORE PC users in general which will obviously affect what game is the most "popular", i.e. you wouldn't find gamers playing that Peggle(?) game or virtual dolls house at a LAN party Not at any of the events I've been to anyway lol

...having said that, we built a customer a fairly expensive machine despite telling him he didn't need it, just so he could play 3D chess and Solitaire. I kid you not

Socialising - Gaming with meat sacks

PC gaming is 99% of the time a solo effort. How many PC games actually have a multi-player component using the same machine? Worms was 2 player and great- loads of fun (actually 4 player worms 3D would be awesome!). Last year we were playing Serious Sam 3 with 4 people using 4 xbox controllers on a PC and a projector.

If you want 4 people in the same room playing then you need to set up a LAN for multi-player on the PC. Now look at consoles and see how many games allow more than one person to play in the same room on the same machine.

If you are someone who only ever plays stand alone single player games or plays online then a PC is going to be the best machine even though it costs way more for the hardware.

If you want a few mates around to play then a console (or two for linking) is far better and less hassle than a LAN party. Console game developers have in a lot of cases managed to squeeze 4 players into a game through things like system link (2 xbox's linked with 2 players per box) but there has been a dearth of 4 player co-op games. One of the reasons Halo is so popular is it's co-op element. Borderlands 2 was also brilliant co-op too.

    When someone says
They will offer not just higher-res graphics but an inspiring amount of innovation he thought. It just needs some time for developers to get up to stride with the new possibilities. “We need to bring excitement back to this industry,” Key concluded.
then I'm all for it. Innovation is the key. Using a consoles' ability to have 4 meat-sacks using it at the same time is something that really needs to be taken advantage of in terms of gameplay.

Give me interesting and thoughtful gaming that enhances a social evening over wizzy graphics any day. In fact I'd like to see 'thoughtful' brought back to the PC too.

That's not how I read his post. Only he can correct it for sure, but I read it as "will they sell twice as much" (by the end of the cycle). One possibility would be a fast start then a sharp drop.

Consoles for kids - PCs for serious gamers.
Flamebait surely. Or a massive dose of close mindedness that I would not expect from an adult..

I like consoles they are platform that will be supported for 5-10 years and you tend to get a broader demographic of users too on the social front. I'll be getting a pc in a couple years or so when 4K gaming is practical, mainly for pc only strategy type games, plus Elite: Dangerous!
