what was original reason for co.uk?

The same reason we have .ac.uk .org.uk and .gov.uk

Depending on price (I never trust 'announcement' prices lol) I'll likely grab the uk version of my business .co.uk domain, purely so another business doesn't grab it and try to be 'me'. After that I'll just shove a redirect to my .co.uk domain so they'll all end up at the same address as before lol.
Do I think it's needed, no but I'm sure nominet needs another source of income
Can UK individuals still opt-out of WHOIS under this new domain if they're non-trading?

It's the UK .com (commercial) - standards were weak but co = commerical. E.g Foo & Co. A lot of other countries use .co, some use com like .com.au (silly aussies).
Of course a big boost to the Colombian registrar, people mostly only buy .co to protect their brand from mis-types ending up somewhere porny. Maybe the .co domain is also why .com came into being rather than make Columbia feel sad because they couldn't have a nice 2 letter domain.
On a related note I'd be so sad if the Cook islands ever decide to alter their domain :/
