The cost of mechanical drives will drop while capacity increases as well so I'd still see them having a role to play in data storage for some time. After all you don't need all that speed to play movies and look at photos so SSD's would be wasted on storage for these purposes.
Problem is that - according to the HDD manufacturers - it's becoming more difficult to squeeze more aereal density out of what we've got now. Which, I guess, is one reason why there's not a lot of 1TB 2.5" drives out there.

On the other hand, I've read an interview with someone from Samsung, who stated that advances in NAND tech, plus economies of scale, meant that we'd continue to see larger SSD's, and current sizes would get cheaper.

From my own experience, I bought a 60GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD in Christmas 2010 for around the same price that I bought a 120GB Samsung EVO for last month.

That said, I still think it'll be a long while before we see HDD's disappear - especially in the 3.5" size. 2.5" though is more arguable, since 500GB seems to be the common size and that's available already for about £250.

NAND has its own density problems, with current chips having a 22nm lithography process is an already tiny wavelength, with poorer write endurance, they're facing the same wall as CPUs are. There's plenty of quantum mechanical trickery we can apply to both storage technologies to squeeze more density out of them, but we're closing in on the wall, fast.

I am looking at the new Dell XPS 15 with the QHD screen. the top model has the 500mb OEM Samsung pro installed. Not sure if I should go for the mid range model and swap out the mSATA drive for this!
