I really don't believe this will work if it uses things like bluetooth (~10m radius), I could be <10m away and easily out of sight of my device, USB keys are as bad as smart cards - fragile, easily lost and more fuss than a password to insert. The lazy/daft people will still turn off screen-lock and the people who actually realise the implications will use strong passwords.
The only idea I've seen that really makes an improvement are fingerprint readers (best 'idea' Apple had for a while to put them on phones) or the NFC rings, fingers and rings (so long as you keep it on) are harder to lose or steal and both of those are very close range options.
