I think you're completely right. Unfortunately for Microsoft and their partners, the expectation of the general customer has been set out by Google's partners and Apple.

I have a tablet (rooted Nook HD+), it runs Android but it is a bit flaky. Regularly fails to sync with google play store for example.

w8 tablet would be a perfect replacement provided under £250, has a full HD screen and a lot more storage capacity than currently provided, a Micro SD slot and preferably a fully functioning micro USB slot (not just for charging). It would then be perfect for work and play

I won't be surprised, Windows tablets lead the race in 2014. tablets like the Nokia, Dell are quite nice and at their price point you can't go wrong as they even come with MS Student Office bundled free. Pay more and you are in the Surface Pro territory.

For all the Angry Bird fans you also won't be disappointed.

Another thought on this: Apple and Samsung sell tablets. Everyone else is a bit player in the market. So which one is MS going to convert to selling windows to make a dent in the market?

Will they lead the Tablet race in 2014? Dunno. Or much care.

Will I buy one? Not unless they change tack on Win8/MUI desktop issues .... and I ain't holding my breath. Until then, Win8 is on my personal blacklist.

MS has Dell, Asus, Lenovo and others producing. Asus produces the Nexus 7 (and other tablets), and Lenovo has been selling quite a few tablets too. Perhaps they don't reach Samsung and Apple sales, but they certainly are known brands and have manufacturing capabilities.

Windows tablets are the new laptops.
