Which is great if you live in an area with 3 coverage... Heck I can't even get Vodaphone and I live in a small town not far from southampton (which has put a dent in the Ovivo SIM deal I just got). I'm basically stuck with O2, EE or a reseller such as Giffgaff or Tesco...

Yes I'm on the £15 a month 12 month contract. Not in a 4G area and not got a 4G phone, but it's still amazing value and still plenty fast enough on HSPA+. The no questions asked tethering is a godsend for my WIFI-only tablets.

It's hard to not talk about Three without sounding like an advert, or you are on commission.

Lol yeah how times have changed.

As an aside though, if your Wifi-only tablets/phone are e.g. all android then AFAIK tethering isn't needed - all the data will look like it's coming from an android device. When you start mixing OSs is when they'll pick it up.

I've been with Three for several years now. The past year I've been using the monthly top up with all you can eat data. It is unlimited but they will certainly cap the speed if you are using it to much. After midnight I can usually watch a few youtube clips but a lot ofthe time during the day/evening I'll struggle to even watch the lowest resolution ones.

Have recently changed phone so will wait to see what the 4G speed capping is like (I think 4G should be on in Northampton soon).

I don't get any slow down, and I don't ever use wifi on my phone as phone Internet is quicker than home broadband which slows down to a halt in the evening thanks to sky throttling it. I've even downloaded steam games using my phone as a router - I get 2.3 MB download compared to 1 MB on home.

Yeah I do suffer from it slowing down in the afternoon/evenings but normally I can still watch 480p YouTube.

And as you say, if Three are putting their money where their mouth is on the "4G for the cost of 3G" then they deserve credit. With that out of the way though, I'm cynical enough to suspect that when a lot of folks start hitting the 4G that the price of the tether-enabled packages is going to go up, (to try and control the network hit).
Oh the power of prophesy ... UK carrier Three reportedly scraps unlimited tethering for new customers (confirmed)
users are now only entitled to use 2GB worth of data for tethering, and once that allowance has expired - you'll have to buy additional 1GB units.
More worryingly (slightly) is this comment:
    PhilipTate 1 hour ago
The three reps I spoke to last week when I was looking into an upgrade told me this was coming as well as a data cap for new contracts from April. All you can eat data is disappearing shortly for new subscribers and being replaced by a 2GB limit
If that's true then I'm less than impressed - sure 2GB is generous for 3G, but surely if you're hitting that nice, shiny new 4G connection like you're supposed to be able to, then you're going to burn though that?

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...
