yeah this killed the idea as far as im concerned. I had been quietly following it with curiosity but now that its associated with facebook its just another thing added to the filters

Crowdfunding is to help launch, and you want a successful product/company.
$2 billion is successful by anyone's measure

Would have saved time to just add a "donate to Facebook" button & skip the "community funding" pretence.

Sony isn't going to win any VR war unless they release it for PC, which I cannot see them doing.The potential VR market is considerably larger than gaming, even taking consoles into account.

The Computer Assisted Engineering and Architecture aspects I can see, but are there other major usages for VR? Ah wait, yes, VR ... adult activities ... nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more squire*...

Joking aside I can't really what's in this for Facebook (especially given the torrent of abuse this announcement generated) unless they're either going do a Facebook simverse like Second Life or, and I think this a lot more likely, they're going to "encourage" Oculus supporting products to link into Facebook, the same way that you're supposed to get an "enhanced gaming experience" by signing into Google Play on Android games.

And no this won't persuade me to get a Facebook account - I really just can't see an benefit for me.

Theres only so much money to be made from selling peoples personal data, so its possibly just as a physical revenue source, if the cost is right and people want to buy it, could be some nice profit to be had.
