I always pay with PayPal - it's way better on fees than bank transfers. And their protection is worth it for me as a buyer. In fact I'd rather they changed the PayPal fees to the buyer by default, since the buyer is the one to benefit from them.

But eBay has way bigger problems - huge fees, unstable and complicated system, huge fees, stupid area / country limitations, huge fees.

i think that paypal splitting from ebay is a good thing

and controversially i think apple pay will be a good thing too

think about it this way, more competition drives down costs and increases benefits for us, the consumer...

i have a strong hatred for paypal, they have screwed me over noumerous times in the past, and their customer service is some of the worst i have ever experienced...although my attitude with them hopefully made up for it

if apple pay is made an option for ebay alongside paypal, and perhaps google wallet, when the first and last charge no fees, paypal will seriously have to rethink their strategies

another option is: paypal is bought out by apple and merged into apple pay, this wouldn't appease many people, but would atleast mean customer service would improve, and not many people can argue that apples customer service is much less than 100% (by customer service i mean in store/over the phone, not botched software updates etc)

what we really need is a shopping site like ebay where both buyers and sellers are thoroughly vetted before they can buy/sell things (i.e. must put in passport/driving license number which is verified with a gov't database, followed by post being sent to their address, which has to be signed and returned, followed by a payment to/fro from a bank account, and finally an item being requested to be sent to an address, and upon recept of that item, you become verified), then they have a detailed database of exactly who is buying/selling, where they live, etc, and if any deals go sour, no issues

wow i know how to blab on...lol

Apple's remote support, I'll agree, is top notch. Unfortunately my experience in their in-store support (the hilariously named "Genius Bar") was that it was inferior to that offered by a PC World trainee. "Inept and incompetent" would actually be a compliment.

PayPal being bought by Apple would be a disaster - far better that it's bought by someone else, actually anyone else other than Wonga perhaps. I was going to suggest that another bank takes them on, but they don't exactly have a stellar reputation for customer service either. Actually, it'll probably get me slagged off rotten, but of all the proper financial institutions I'd suggest American Express would be the most obvious partner.

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...
