Re: Display vendors to ramp up 5K monitor production in 2015

The Pixel Per Inch craze of mobile devices has finally made it to desktop monitors as Pixels On Display, and once again we can thank apple for leading the charge. It wont be long and we'll be able to display photos from digital cameras at natural resolution!

For years people have been complaining that desktop monitors had been stuck at 1080p whilst mobile devices were rapidly reaching the same pixel count.

If display resolutions get high enough we wont need anti aliasing anymore as we wontt be able to see the pixels. Which should lessen the burdon the gpu's significantly just need to convince nvidia / amd of this before they release there 16x MFAA 6k ready GPU's

The higher DPI gets, the closer to Resolution Independence you get (becasue you no longer have to worry about subpixel weirdness from noninteger scaling factors when the scaling factor is a high number). At that point, it doesn't matter squat what resolution you render you buffer as, as long as you have a fixed-function scaler to produce the output buffer (e.g. the scaler driving DSR).

Ultra-high DPIs mean that 1:1 scaling is no longer particularly important.

I've been holding off for 2880p ('5k') for a while now.

As both a software developer and a reasonably high-end gamer, this will ideal for me. What most people forget is that if you end up scaling a 4K monitor basically becomes a 1080 monitor in games or work. Otherwise its off ratio or windowed/bordered. A 5K monitor will scale down to 1440p perfectly, which is where I'm happy for 90% of gaming. But I then get to have all the single screen real-estate I'd need for developing modern responsive websites.

This is all useless without proper scaling support in Windows.
