Destiny has prevented any other game being put in my xbox one atm, got DA inquisition waiting too
Divinity Original Sin
Still Age of Empires II.
I have been thinking about this question since it was first out on here, and I'm finding it hard to find an answer to it.
These are some of the games I can remember as 2014 titles:
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - I only just got this on a Steam sale for £3.99 and all I can say, having played the tutorial is that it would be better using a controller instead of keyboard and mouse and that the game doesn't support 2560x1440 resolution.
Thief - I played the first level, it was ok but nothing drew me back to the game at that point, it's one of the few games from this year that I keep intending to go back to.
Resident Evil 4: Ultimate HD Edition - They took an unplayable game and revamped the graphics to make it prettier but it's still unplayable.
Batman: Arkham Origins - One of the Titles that I got free with my GPU, tried it out, looks great but didn't even finish the first stage, I think that was due to work or something else, not got back to playing it yet.
Watch Dogs - So much hype but when I eventually got round to trying it, I couldn't see what the fuss was about, never finished it, might go back to it if there's nothing else to play at the time or I'm in the right mood.
Gauntlet - A bit of nostalgia with a co-operative twist, loads of fun with the right people playing, you definitely need comms to play this.
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel - Hasn't lost any of the Borderlands laughs, I played a good few hours on this one and do like it, sad to say I didn't get enough time to play more, I will definitely go back to this, I think I was just a bit burned out on Borderlands titles by the time this came out as I played loads of Borderlands 2 to complete the story and get ready for this one.
Far Cry 4 - One of the best looking games I've played in a long time, too early to say if it's the best of 2014 but it has to be a contender.
So that's my shortlist, I think for me the winner has to be Gauntlet, of the games that I got out of this year's releases, this is the one I kept (keep) going back to. Not much of a story, but I can play it online and more importantly I can play it with my kids. No language issues and compelling co-operative play make it a fun little game.
Well,
These are mostly old games, as I have been trying to work my way through the backlog of games I accumulate, interspersed with some new ones that I just can't hold off on.
Super Mario 3d World - Wii U. After an initial play, it was left as some other titles (and life in general) got in the way. Managed to get back into it a few months back, and its made me realise how much fun it is to play. Not, gritty, realistic, but just fun. Technically, looks great, with no hitches in framerate, it just has that something that once you really get into it gets you hooked. Hats off to Nintendo.
The Evil Within - PC. Not everyone's cup of tea, and arguably the gameplay isn't even that great, but in terms of setting, visuals and feel, it was fantastic for me. Some real creepy and jumpy moments, and a shame that it couldn't sustain it all to the end. Well reported technical issues, but after some tweaks, getting it running on 2560x1440 at 40-60fps made for a great environment to be in.
Steamworld Dig - 3DS. Just wanted something to use my 3DS for after finishing Link Between worlds, and picked this up and was blown away. Not the longest game, but I really couldn't put it down after starting with it. If you love the whole metroid-vania thing then this is fantastic. Not the most challenging game, but for the money, the gameplay mechanics are well polished and the game has a lovely visual style.
Bayonetta 2 - Wii U. Only really played some of the full game, and mostly the demo practicing combos on loop, but its really is an amazing game. Visually, its fantastic, with so much going on in the fore and background, whilst still being vibrant. A feast for the eyes. Gameplay wise, I cant say I'm the best at these sort of games (I was average at MGR-Revengance and DMC) but the combo mechanism is honed well enough to make stringing together decent combos challenging - and importantly, making you feel like a complete badass! Not that much love for most Wii U games, but I have to say its quietly building up a great library of titles away from the yearly AAA franchises
Cant really pick one that was my fave out of all of those, but it will have to do
Regards
Jonny
Good games i've played this year: BF4, Destiny, Divinity: OS, Elite Dangerous (cant say that's the best, not played it enough, but is very good so far), Shadow of Mordor. However, favourite game this year would be: Diablo 3 (RoS) with the 2.0 updates. Have completely smashed that this year!
Dragon Age Inquisition has been great fun so far, and Forza Horizon has been great too (looking forward to getting number 2). In terms of hours though, Marvel Heroes by a long long wayDespite a 'rocky' start (which is a nice way of putting it) its turned into a great arpg, each of the 80+ characters has different styles some with very interesting mechanics. For a F2P title its worth a look, esp if you liked the idea when it launched.
2014 goes down as the year of slim pickings IMO.
Purchased more than almost any other year and been thoroughly unimpressed with most of it.
Batman: Arkham Origins was probably the best (from this years releases) but still far from a masterpiece.....probably helps I started playing it a week ago and it's set at Christmas!
While not a 2014 game, my favorite game that I played this year was probably Gran Turismo 6

Farcry 3 is the best game I played this year. Yes number 3.
Bit of a focus on modding this year from me with Fallout 3 seeing an upgraded return early in the year and currently Oblivion fully textured up and broken parts fixed (leveling mainly).
Lots of goodness.
Actual 2014 games? Divinity: Original Sin probably
I do not go all voodoo on cuddly toys.
Game I've enjoyed most has been any of the Kingdom Rush series (original, Frontiers, or this year's "Origin" release), but that's been on a tablet.
In terms of PC games, the one I'm playing most is still Just Cause 2. But if it has to be something "modern" then I guess Wolfenstein:New Order gets my "Best of 2014" prize, with perhaps an honorable mention for BF4.
I really wanted to like either this years (Unity) or last years (Black Flag) Assassin's Creed - but shocking bugs with both knock them out of the running, and I suspect Far Cry 4 will be similarly flawed.
The wooden-spoon-and-stand-in-the-corner-with-a-dunces-hat award goes to Call of Duty:Ghosts (I didn't get my copy until January so it's in). Seriously guys, THAT was the best you could do?!And this years release has so failed to "move" me that I've not bought it - never mind pre-order, (and this from someone who claims to be a CoD fan).
Gotta be Wolfenstein, with 2nd place going to Kerbal Space Program, 3rd is Bioshock Infinite and 4th Shadow of Mordor
Far Cry 4.
