Accepted and expected, but still a vunerable addition left under an unsecured PSU or near a graphics card which would catch on it, I like my drives in bays where they are safe from me the user.

Most motherboard configurations with M.2 slots I've seen place the M.2 slot under the first PEG slot, having the GPU completely cover the M.2 card. Hardly vulnerable. On the contrary, it couldn't be safer.

It sticks out maybe 0.5cm from the motherboard. If you're going to drop something heavy on your motherboard and kill it, it doesn't really change much whether you drop it on one set of silicon or another.
