    Ha how far back ?

Let's see how many I can remember
    Dual GTX 670s (current)
    Dual GTX 460s
    Dual GTX 280s
    Dual 8800GTXs
    6800 I think
geforce4 Ti, can't remember which one
geforce2 ultra, I remember that one being an absolute beast.
    Rage Pro
    Voodoo2
Voodoo, which was my first ever graphics card.

This looks right, although I was doing a helluva lot of drugs between the geforce2 ultra and 8800GTX, so those days are hazy...

    Oops also it wasn't a voodoo2, it was a voodoo3 3000, I can't remember if I ever had a voodoo2, or if I went from voodoo to voodoo3

I would've taken an R9 290X over any card before this mess started. Now I would take two of them.

Ok, don't forget to add on a 700W+ PSU and an air conditioner to the shopping cart.

I went with a pair of R9 290's and they have run fine at 1180Mhz core for over a year. I was expecting them to cook me after reading on a few forums, but yeah the heat thing is a myth and the cards are no worse than the GTX780Ti's I was considering.

    Just an FYI,

No-one will take you seriously. I'm quite new to the scene but I know the graphics market is a big, ever swinging pendulum of back and forth and for you to sit there, list your history of purchase (regardless of if Nvidia or AMD were the better choice at the time) and then chastise the company you have invested in just once, screams petty fan-boi. But it's your money so you may do with it as you please...

Also, It should be pretty obvious, but I would recommend you don't discuss any potentially illegal activity. It doesn't make you look 'cool'

    And also fyi my GPU history;
    GTX760
GTX650 (Best my budget could stretch to at the time, I didn't trust the second hand market)
iGPU in a A8-3870K (first gen APU)

My money would still probably go on a Nvidia card. They are so much more efficient and cooler running being the main reason.

funny while reading this my my 290 is sitting at 32 deg c and pulling 29.3w ...
    while playing it never go's above 48 c .. that's in farcry 4 .. I may buy another and a 4k mon/tv see if I could get it hotter ...
simple water loop takes out all the pain .. nice quiet hmmmm

A nice and quiet 970 would have been cheaper than a 290 + waterblock and equally as quiet while costing less to run.....while performing better and being a lot less hassle then having to drain the system every time you want to do anything in the PC.

Well probably not in a fair fight. Nvidia must have had a reason to fudge the GTX970, and that could only have been because the R9 290 is faster.

What was he supposed to do in the 10 months between their launches - play on an IGP?

Dual 280's? Was that before or after Nvidia slashed the price a couple of weeks after launch?

    Dual 460's, let's have a look at the 460.

Still buying Nvidia cards back in the day when you had to count back 11 cards to find an Nvidia card in perf/Watt tables, I see...I guess reasonable performance at decent TDP wasn't that important to you back then?

Implying his 460 was bought when 6850 was out, which it wasn't for whole half a year lol... So yeah 460 was great, i had it and no complaints unlike all the 6000 series amd that ive seen on 2nd hand market trying to get sold. Not to mention 460 was running cool <70C on full load, again unlike 6850. Id take a card that works at 70C doing same job as cheaper card going for 85C any day.

Re: AMD takes aim at Nvidia's GTX 970 and cuts R9 290X price

As others have pointed out, just let products speak for themselves. And it's always interesting how apparently due to AMD being an underdog seems to make it acceptable for petty PR stunts like this. Now, obviously people need to buy AMD products, be it CPUs or GPUs, in order for the company to be kept afloat, even though it would technically never go under due to aggressive anti-monopoly laws and such, but in the end we only see AMD doing this sort of embarassing tricks (like their infamous Youtube videos).

With that said, bring Zen and 300 series and let's see if there'll be an i7 killer and HBM put to practice in order to shame the competition.

At the end of the day it still trounces all over the competition, it still has 4GB RAM, and it's still nVidia, which I'll be sticking to. AMD just don't appeal to me at all, their CPUs and their GPUs both play second fiddle to a better company.

Myabe focus on producing a GPU that performs well at a decent TDP and a reasonable temperature too.

Plus others I have forgotten about.

I seem to have had magic cards, since apart from minor niggles,I seem to have been able to run all of my games fine at the time.

    NVIDIA FANBOY OUT

An HD6850 1GB overclocked to nearly 1GHZ consumed no more power than a reference GTX460 running at stock clockspeeds.

The HD6850 1GB cards were cheaper too.

Plus the HD5850 1GB was out at the same time for near GTX460 money too and was faster.
