Re: QOTW: Do you use a NAS server at home?

I have a HP microserver (Proliant n54l iirc?), running Ubuntu Server 14.01 and then just a couple of basic packages on top. Storage provided by 4x 2TB Seagate Barracuda in software RAID5 (As the upgraded RAID daughterboard for the Proliant was expensive for what it is), so that's 6TB useable with some (sort of) redundancy.

I use a PC made from some old bits (Intel E6600 cpu), currently 5TB storage running Windows Home Server. Use it to store all my documents & media which it automatically backs up across its drives and streams around the house.

Using a Synology DS214. Had another Synology box before that one as well.

Re: QOTW: Do you use a NAS server at home?

I don't really see any point. We don't have any media files we want to stream (except perhaps audio, and client support is poor) and it's cheaper and better to use multiple, disconnectable external drives for backup rather than a central always-on NAS.

If there's a third use for it I haven't come across one.

Re: QOTW: Do you use a NAS server at home?

Same as Dooms HP Microserver, filled with 2TB disks, used all the time for media server, storage etc. Could do with something faster to be honest but it's been utterly reliable running WHS 2011.

Bought a refurbished 1TB Buffalo LinkStation Live 5 years ago and it has done me proud. It gets used mainly for streaming TV and moving files between devices (PC, tablets, phones). One of the most useful pieces of kit I've bought.

Re: QOTW: Do you use a NAS server at home?

I bought a Zyxel NAS 540 and four 4TB WD Red HDDs which I'm running in RAID 5. The NAS box has a bit cheap build quality as it tends to have weird vibrations causing extra noise, but once I figured how to make it stop, I've been very pleased with it. 11 terabytes of storage \o/

No. But I've been wanting to get one. Just currently don't have the budget for it.

Re: QOTW: Do you use a NAS server at home?

I have a QNAP TS221 that I use to store my music in Flac format. I run Twonky server on the NAS and use it to stream the music accross the home network to my Hi-Fi using a Pioneer N50 network streaming device. Its a great box. Great support. Plenty of Apps. It might not be the cheapest out there but you get what you pay for. I'd reccomend QNAP to anyone.

Re: QOTW: Do you use a NAS server at home?

I've considered getting a NAS many times, but the cost has always seemed prohibitively high compared to the (relatively) small spectrum of use cases. In the end, I built my own combined HTPC/file server for about the same money, and I'm really happy with that choice. It's bigger than a NAS unit, but does more too.
