I guess Apple is now rich enough that they could buy one of the small players, like say Ferrari, who already have hybrid technology. Heck, they could probably buy the whole FIAT/Chrysler group out of petty cash.

Edit to add: Apple worth $700B (http://www.imore.com/apples-market-c...ook-became-ceo), whole FCA group worth $9.2B (http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/...0HS1F120141003)

I think that this is a lot more likely than us seeing some kind of mass-market "iCar". After all, Apple has zero track record in the kind of mechanical engineering needed for a car.

So if we're not talking about either a very niche oddity product, nor some kind of tie-up with a proper car maker, then this is probably a demonstrator for ICE tech that they want to put in partner vehicles (Audi and BMW would seem to be natural partners).

Of course, there'll inevitably be those who claim that this means that Apple is going to "create" the electric vehicle market the same way that they did with smartphones (erm, nope) and tablets (equally fallacious).

Ending on a positive note though, perhaps their myriad ideas on HCI could be interesting though and, dare I say it, actually desirable.

OR could this just be for the design of the infotainment system in cars? And they are just having a dig at Tesla's infotainment which is argued as being a bit rubbish?

It won't have user serviceable parts and you won't be able to plug it in at on pf the current charging points as it will have a different connector to all other cars.

Does this mean that General Motors *(or Toyota) should come out with better phones and tablets than the apple company?

Nicer than a Prius, but I would much much rather have the Porsche 918 spyder.

8 Series cars have always looked special to my eye, (second only to the M1 for prettiness). Can't see any chance of BMW getting bought, since I would have thought that state and federal governments would have pushed back very hard.

And here's a very unappealing thought - if (not going to happen) Apple bought BMW then that'd mean that they (Apple) also owned Mini and ... Rolls Royce!

Apple smapple. The real travesty of the current motor industry is that this beauty didnt make it into production.

I've worked on that and had a go in it (as a passenger only unfortunately ).

You will get to see it in action though: -

Re: Apple rumoured to be working on car to rival Tesla electric vehicles

If it is anything like their other products it will have inbuilt "manufactured obsolescence".
I hope they don't follow other product downfalls - extremely hard to replace the battery, overpriced, does not like playing with anybody else' infrastructure when it comes to plugging in for recharges.
But I am sure the Apple fraternity will love it and buy it in the millions, just because it is a Apple.
