I guess it's still better than a monthly subscription, and for those willing to pay, they are not getting anything "over powered" and exclusive.
Personally, as a way to get more money to further develop the game I think it's not too bad. A few pay a premium and et rewarded, while everyone else gets more content for free.
Although, I'd also like a real miniature model for $250! (Not a player, just a model fan!)
lol looked into this first you buy a ship £30-£2k yeah crazy right then you have to buy extras guns, cargo ,fuel ect ect then you do have to pay a subscription !!! and it's not out of beta/alpha yet ...
but with 77 million in the bank there selling the dream .. and at any point they can pack there bags and move on ...

What rubbish. I've spent £27 on this so far. I need to spend nothing more (And for that I get the Squadron 42 single player, access to the alpha/betas and final MMO subscription free). These costs are just to allow people with lots of cash who want to support the game to support it (free from the likes of EA). Everything for sale will be available in game for in game cash and will not be purchasable once the game releases. Everything for sale currently can be rented with in game cash.
@cheesemp .. so you don't need a subscription ? i'll take another look but that's how it came across to me while reading

Guys, I spent about £30 or whatever it was on the Aurora LN package in 2013 (I'm sure it's still around the same price). A cheap package like that gets you the whole game and all the pre game modules. You don't need to purchase again if you don't want to. Though I do actually plan on spending more to support the game if it turns out as good as I'm thinking it will be.
There are people who have already, and who will continue to drop 100s, even 1000s into this game during this early stage and beyond. If you were putting that kind of money into the game, you'd want a cool starter package wouldn't ya? It's a way to help them raise more funding too, obviously (Remember, subsciptions are not necessary to play this game, if they'll even exist - probably will). As long as it doesn't ruin the game, I don't mind it. But, maybe this is a bad thing. Lots of publishers are watching to see which things this game succeeds with. So this could set a bad precident for future games. Though, to be fair, I think that's already been done by EA and Ubisoft. And I prefer the way CIG are doing it so far. I just look at it in the same way as the funding tiers on Kickstarter. It's the same thing really, isn't it?
Not at all. The subscription gets you access to design docs early and a few cosmetic items for your hanger. Personally I think the people that spends 100s or 1000s on this game are crazy but its their cash and every penny they spend makes a better game for me!

Okay, so I'm with many of the 'who'd spend that much on a game' comments but I also get that it is their money to spend as they like. The one issue I'm concerned about with this re: gameplay is not the ship, it is the 'permanent insurance' that comes with it. Having a bunch of peeps with one of the best fighter/bombers in the game who do not lose anything at all when they die at risk of encouraging suicide attacks/griefing (for a normal player to die, the insurance cost acts as a soft limit). Is there even going to be a delay on how quickly they can jump back in the ship? Imagine one of the big Eve battles if one side had access to an unlimited number of suicidal heavily armed ships...

eve was good in the beginning then they dumbed it down made it easy now it's just lag fest ship battles with 0.0 owned by a few ..I know one person with 14 accounts and 3 of those are top lvl alliance leaders on different sides ..lol
I'm looking for something like old eve but not point and click .. hope this is it ..

Few points I've picked up in reading the different 'outputs' that may be of interest:
1) Insurance in game is supposed to be quite cheap so lifetime insurance isn't a 'big' bonus.
2) Insurance will not replace a ship straight away. It will replace ships in a timescale thats matches it rarity. Ie. my crummy arora might be replaced in a few hours but the big ships could be days
3) the LTI insurance only covers the hull and basic equipment - You'll lose cargo, better weapons etc (It will apparently be possible to buy full coverage insurance for in game cash)
4) Perma-death - If your character gets injured too often they die. You can then get a new character (a 'relative') but you'll lose cash on inheritance tax.
These are still all up in the air a bit but this shows where they are heading.
At the end of the day if you're concerned just don't buy it yet. Just wait for the full game and make a decision then. For me £27 wasn't a massive loss if I can relive my PC Gaming glory days of Tie Fighter and Freespace...
