Small problem with the rants, though. It's an idea put forward by an [b]independent[/i] commission. Moreover, one commissioned by Gordon Brown, that well-known Tory Chancellor. Ten years ago. Before Cameron was even leader of the opposition, never mind PM.

But in the best traditions of political rants, never let actual facts get in the way.

Oh, and by the way, that would be the exact same commission that proposed allowing personal copying and ripping of music you own legitimate copies of, another oppressive measure enacted by those horrible Tories to do us all down. Oh, wait ....
    I didn't specify a party.

Okay, so it was the "totalitarian shifts" of the Labour government, what was it ....

"Yet another example of the government favouring the needs of private corporations over the protection of its people."

Interesting interpretation of Labour's ethos. Explains why they lost, though.

I'm interested, though .... when you said ...

I'm just waiting for the announcement of a new 'special police' to deal with these criminals who haven't been subject to a proper investigation.
... which government, other than our current one, do you expect to make this announcement?

Well you just said it was the labour government that started/suggested it... So... Yeah...

I'm fully aware that these things have been in the process for considerable time, if Mr Snowden is to believed, (and I don't see why not?) The mechanics have been in place for a long time anyway. The fact that it's Cameron at the forefront at this minute is neither here nor there, although the pride by which he seems to talk about issues that corrode the privacy, support and protection of the public don't surprise me.

I think you are wrongly assuming that because i'm (clearly) not a conservative, i must be a labour supporter. In reality I don't think it matters which party is in power, despite their outward facing 'ethos'. The rotten attitudes of modern career politicians are much deeper than the colour of their flyers and frankly, I don't have a lot of faith in many of them at all. As you have explained, both are capable of the same over-reaching authoritarian practice, so you must understand my perspective of generic distain to a certain extent?

Deciding which was the lesser of evils was not a proud experience for me in the election as there wasn't anyone worthy of my support who I felt stood for my beliefs, for that reason I don't tell anyone who I voted for and don't intend on doing so.

    In summary... I didn't specify a party...

Oh, I do understand your disdain, Biscuit, on some of the wider issues. I share some of it. I was pulling your wotsit a bit, seeing as this thread is about sentences for copyright infringement.

Or the countless other government funded projects which sink billions of pounds of taxpayers money and never end up delivering what they said they would.

Why are there no public inquiries with any power into these scandals?? People have gotten rich out of all of this and gotten away scot-free.

No,its the old boys network so they cannot possibly incovenience their chums. But the plebs OTH.... lets see how far they can be squeezed.

    Edit!!

    Look at Iceland:

They convicted the dodgy bankers. They even used bounter hunters to go after them:

Yeah Iceland dealt with it perfectly and are an example that I tell people about. Also I forgot to mention our trident upgrade that will cost 100Bn and something like 3-5 Bn tp just assess what upgrades are "needed".

Also Iceland is the only country out of a recession.

I think in the bigger picture, should we not be focusing more on rapists, murdered and generally those who put our life in danger and not those who download a few movies to watch at home with the kids.
OK, different if you are downloading to make a profit, as that is getting rich on others work.

But seriously 10 years for pirates. If they done that, half the UK would be locked up.

As has been covered extensively in this thread, it's not about downloaders. It's about those either pirating as a business, or about those seriously disadvantaging the rights holders. this change makes no difference at all, none whatsoever, to those downloading a few movies.
