My first impressions with the early preview builds were highly optimistic, but then they jammed in live tiles to the start menu, and cortana, which funny enough doesn't even work in most countries. Idiotic. Still, like Win8, with a bit of tweaking and 3rd party software, it can be made usable, and DX12 is too important an improvement to skip over.

Interesting, although isn't that a pretty narrow usage case, and besides I thought Spartan was the next big thing and IE was "just so last decade"...

Ditto on the preview builds - it's actually usable (if not pleasant) on an old Atom-powered netbook with 2GB RAM and normal HDD. But the rest I'm not sure whether you're being serious or sarcastic ... that in it's "out of box" setup it's not usable and therefore "not fit for purpose"? Plus surely DX12 is only important to gamers - if you're running a Windows PC for other reasons then it's "no big deal" (and arguably not worth the accompanying hassle of W10).

Then again, maybe I'm warming to Windows8.1 - it now takes about 15 minutes of use before I want to take a mallet to a PC running it.

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

Astonishing what can be achieved with hypnotherapy and lavender oil, ain't it? And maybe a stiff brandy.

Re: QOTW: What are your first impressions of Windows 10?

    In short:

Great on a desktop, the new start menu works well (better than I thought), but cortana is useless.

Awful on a tablet - windows 8 was just so much better in all aspects for tablet users. Windows 10 becomes a confused mess where they have removed or replaced pretty much every useful gesture/tablet orientated feature. Cortana is still rubbish, mostly down to being tied to Bing and not being able to talk to exchange unless you are on office 365.

    I'm quite serious.

Indeed, the 'start menu' is just a smaller version of the start screen from Win8. So right out of the gate I need classic shell just to have a usable desktop where I can find things. And that's before you start decluttering and fixing infuriating defaults.

Not only gamers, the new architecture also benefits GPU compute applications as well. But if all you're doing is trivial office junk, then yes, complete waste of time.
