This is looking very promising.
I think the way the market is starting to head, they would be silly not to. They are seeing opportunities in the steambox, laptop gaming and future console markets and as they have missed out on mobile and arguably the current-gen consoles, it makes sense to not miss this potential boat....especially as they haven't done much since SandyBridge other than beefing up the iGPU!
I am still utterly baffled by how long it's taking AMD to understand the importance of Linux drivers.

My worry is that they do understand the importance of Linux drivers, and this is just the best they can do
They have published the signed binary firmware blobs required for Fury already so open source drivers can use them. I gather Nvidia still don't allow 9xx series cards to work on open source so you have to use their binary blob. So the intent seems better from AMD, just the execution sucks.
