    I thought Vulkan was replacing OpenGL and OpenGL ES, maybe I've misunderstood though.

    It is, and no, you haven't.

    Vulkan is the next iteration of OpenGL. These days it's just "in" to stick with code names/working titles.

    It would be very nice to have a universal API. The problem is Microsoft and XB1. They will put a spanner in the works. Lets not forget why we have DX12......

    Vulkan *could* cover the XB1, if Microsoft choose not to then isn't that just a problem for the XB1? OTOH, if people use game engines that cover both Vulkan and XB1, then Microsoft choosing to go their own way becomes moot.

    Apple sticking with Metal might be more of an issue.
