    Makes sense on that one.
I went looking for VivePort, but found nothing even vaguely official. Just loads of Reddit speculation and one person who claimed to have downloaded it, before then finding it fritzed his Vive... Not sure I believe him.

Does it really cost that much?
I know Elite started using Steam for distribution, as the latter's servers seemed better-geared around handling way more customers than FD expected... But unless you have no other choice, surely it can't cost too much or all teh big-name publishers wouldn't be using Steam in the first place?

Steam is straightforward, easy and far less hassle to talk my 'older' gaming friends through setup, rather than yet another something to log into and configure and understand and yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda.....
Most of my friends like to pretend they are old fuddy-duddies... especially the ones who actually work in the upper echelons of IT tech/application support!!

Of course - No-one wants to buy a srubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishy top-end PC just to play Farmville in VR and Facebook needs to recoup the 2 billion price they paid for Oculus's soul!

Steam takes a 30% cut of all sales. Companies want to use their own store, because even if they have to pay for infrastructure they basically get an instant 30% boost in income even for the same sale price.
Companies still sell on Steam, because it became the de-facto standard. Getting a 30% boost in income per game is no good if hardly anyone buys your game. The rise of the Humble Store, GoG, etc are helping to change this and encourage a move towards more direct distribution by developers.

And yet many people are still complaining because they can't launch the game from Steam, have to use UPlay, Origin, GoG, Humble, This, That, The Other and create/remember a whole new bunch of accounts and passwords... which doesn't help to reduce the Steamopoly...

Apparently people are unaware that you can create non-Steam game shortcuts that, from within Steam, will still launch the game or its launcher, or indeed any app, I believe...
Rather than reinstall Elite when it came out on Steam, I just did ^that. Everything else still works, including the overlays.
