Perhaps another way of looking at it. Microsoft has an opportunity to data mine the Windows 10 users as a way of raising revenue or open new markets. The corporates and institutions are a different ball game on the other hand and where Microsoft hopes to migrate their services to the cloud as means of raising revenue. Furthermore, these types of users can be distinguished by the terms of the licensing meaning MS can target the right audience for data mining.

So yeah, privacy is a real concern for most of us unless you're corporate/institution.

You mean enterprises using the Enterprise version of Windows 10? That would be the only one that allows disabling the sending of "telemetry data" completely. Also the one where updates aren't forced on you.

The Enterprise version of Windows 10 is a completely different beast ...at least in terms of what you can do. Even more so with the "Anniversary Update" coming shortly. You know, the one where you can no longer disable Cortana. And the one, which differentiates which group policies are applicable to which version (hint: a lot of GPs are no longer applicable to Pro either).

There's a reason the Enterprise version wasn't part of the "free upgrade" deal. Just as there's a reason you cannot buy an individual license for it.

I trust the picture becomes a bit more clear now...

PS: One of the new "features" in the Anniversary Update is the inability to disable the lock screen on a desktop pc. Don't ask me why they felt the need for that. Only Nadella (and possibly God) knows that.

Re: Windows 10 free updates end at 10.59am on Saturday (UK time)

It's a real pain about DirectX 12 being Windows 10 only. So many people are going to be shoehorned into Windows 10 just for DX12. Even if they manage to stifle the majority of spying options.. Microsoft can just shift the goal posts overtime with further "updates" and perhaps prevent some future spying features from being disabled.

Hopefully Vulkan will take off and gamers will at least have a choice between DX12 and Vulkan. Linux and OSX could benefit from the resentment of Windows 10 for going in the direction it currently is.

BTW, softwaregeeks.co.uk are still selling Windows 7 keys for £14.99 and Windows 8.1 keys for £18.99.

I'm so scared of the deadline I've already updated 3 years ago. To Ubuntu MATE.
