    Except it's the public purse that paid for the original lines. Then the whole lot was sold to private enterprise.
    Look up economic rent. It's one of the main reasons we have watchdogs like Ofcom.

    that's the key part. it was sold off so the new owners should be able to do what they want within the law generally speaking

    to be fair though, I presume those are the headline list prices whereas most of us know virgin and sky in particular offer retention deals of up to 75% off plus £100 credit to the account so it's probably not going to be that accurate a graph in real terms. if you stick your RRP up and then just offer it at half price to new customers it looks like they are getting a bigger saving, likewise the retention deals to existing customers. it's those who are stuck in the middle who don't negotiate a deal that end up paying the full price
