Threadripper sounds like something you do after a night on the town and a good curry.

Seriously, what are 32 threads gonna do for you on a desktop PC?

Intel's line up as it is, looks kind of pathetic...

If true those 1956 and 1977 are going to give Intel a serious run for their money even with lower IPC.

Presumably a more economical alternative for workstation users currently having to buy hugely expensive Intel Xeons.

Re: AMD Ryzen 9 Threadripper CPUs rumoured to offer up to 16C/32T

10 and 14 core versions? Colour me highly sceptical. 12 cores @ 3.6GHz/4GHz in a 140W envelope? Nope. To fit 6 cores in a 65W envelope the clocks are pulled down to 3.2GHz/3.6GHz. There is no way they can run two dies @ 3.6Ghz base in 70W each.

Why? Because they're going to be running the same silicon in servers, so why not? We're a long way from knowing what's actually going to happen with the platform (early plans for the server versions were BGA only) and how accessible/beneficial it'll be to enthusiasts, but there's always someone out there who'll chase the bigger number...

Render my 3D renderings considerably quicker than 4/8/10/12/16 threads currently available at 'consumer' prices...

graphic designers, architects, creatives and advertisers, etc. Anyone who does compute intensive graphics needs to render.

parrallel compute for matrix crunching = far superior 3D CAD modelling eg, FE analyses, robot/tekla computation, etc. A heavy multicore CPU and bank of RAM and we could feasibly start to process whole building frames rather than having to split models and process areas individually. More work to get the model set-up but then a much simpler workflow beyond it.

I'm interested in how this turns out.

games using DX12 use cores more than frequency more now...
gonna be interesting using a 126c/32t cpu to play BF1.
in all seriousness 1/2 years ago Intel/Nvidia were my only real choice for my gaming computer (intel CPU 2 years ago, GTx 1060 6GB this year) but now i would be moving towards AMD for both
