Does not seem to have made any difference to the sales on Ebay, RX 480s still going for north of £300 today.
The prices will stay fairly high initially, as the less informed snap them up - but I bet they start trending down in a week or two.
Starting to think the real money is in GPU speculation. Buy a few up that are good for crypto, hold them until a bubble and then sell.

Hopefully the coming weeks see will
We all knew it was always bound to happen, as I pointed out in a previous post. I admit I didn't expect it to happen this quickly though.
As one thing I wondered in the other post wasn't answered, perhaps this thread would be more appropriate to repost it (albeit slightly reworded):
For those who are more familiar with mining, is it likely that the mining would have put too much strain on the GPU for it to be worth the risk of buying said second-hand units for us non-miners for the more usual purposes of gaming etc.?
When a crypto boom hits the mainstream media, that's when the bubble is nearing its peak. Smart begins to pull out under cover of the manic naive rushing in.
just remember the card has run 24/7 at max for a long time .. so even tho it might be 6 months old in real terms it's yrs old .. mining rigs have cards die all the time due to heat and how long there on ..
imo I'd never buy a second hand card unless it's from someone you know ..
An ex-mining GPU right now? The current boom has only been in the news for a month or so, so once the altcoins go back to normal levels there'll probably be a fair few ~1 month old cards on ebay. Factor in that a mining card shouldn't have been overclocked (if anything, it may well have been downclocked for efficiency), and if you find a good deal (and use paypal, ofc) it doesn't look like a bad idea to me
Thanks for the responses everyone, I appreciate the views given.
I suspect my current R9 270 - which I bought via eBay a few years ago and has served me well thus far - was an ex-mining card due to the dust present on the fan, but it was never specifically stated as such, only mentioned as being a few weeks old if I remember correctly, so couldn't say for sure that it actually was.
I don't currently plan on getting a new graphics card, but depending upon how attractive prices get it could be good enough to tempt me into doing so.
Yeah I'll be keeping an eye on the prices for sure
I sold my Strix 980Ti for $360 the other week....glad I did...prices are high...I got my wife a new iPad...she was sooooo happy.
lol! yall doing think these hackers are part of a national group? working for joint governments?
Today Quartz reports that ETH miners are leasing Boeing 747s to deliver GPUs. See below:
Some of them are even resorting to leasing Boeing 747s to fly the increasingly scarce graphics processors from AMD and Nvidia directly to their ethereum mines so they can be plugged in to the network as quickly as possible.
“Time is critical, very critical,” in mining, Marco Streng, chief executive of Genesis Mining, a major ethereum miner, told Quartz. “For example, we are renting entire airplanes, Boeing 747s, to ship on time. Anything else, like shipping by sea, loses so much opportunity.”
