It's a pretty miserable dystopian future that's becoming a reality.. Or a tax-avoiders control freaks dream. The sad thing is these workers will have to put up with it until they are inevitably replaced by automation entirely. It reminds me of the Neill Blomkamp's vision in Elysium to a degree.

That would certainly be one possibility.

Another would be bonuses based on efficient work achieved. And if so, I don't see a problem with that.

Suppose two workers doing identical jobs, Andy and Bob. Over a period, say, month, three months, six months, year, Andy consistently is faster than Bob. Maybe he's fitter, maybe he's brighter, maybe he just concentrates more. Or, maybe Bob is a bit of a slacker and doing the bare minimum. Maybe Bob's a smoker and taking half a dozen 10-minute fag breaks every day.

But whatever the reason, shouldn't hard worker Andy get paid a bonus for working harder? Also, when it comes to promoting someone to supervisor, who'd you want, Andy or Bob? I know who I'd prefer.
Bob, definitely would be Bob. Why would you want someone like Andy to be your line manager? From a business perspective though, Andy.
