Yup true... but in this case the DAG is there to literally stop people using ASIC's to mine. Soon the DAG will be over 3 gig and again mining will be made a bit more difficult. This is deliberate as I'm sure you already know

What I don't understand is why an energy efficient ASIC for mining is a bad thing.

It's to limit how much ETH can be mined. Simple as. You need to be an expensive gfx card instead of a cheap asic

It's not enough to have fun, they need to ruin other peoples fun to really enjoy it

I'd imagine this is having a knock-on effect on 4K monitor sales, because folk cannot afford a GPU that will drive modern games at 4K.

However, as I'm perfectly happy with QHD, it'll be a long time before I upgrade my 980 Ti anyway.

Not sure about 4k monitor sales but 4K Tv sales are pretty good so I hear, along with HDR capable stuff. My V6 box supports both but as I'm currently stuck on 1080P with both tv and projector it's a bit moot

You're assuming most people buy 4k monitors for gaming. Even intel onboard can handle desktop stuff and video at 4k and rendering cards are affected by miners so those use cases are unaffected.

I'm sure he had a number in mind, just not what we would consider a fair comparison. Perhaps comparing by dedicated gpu revenue, which would eliminate Intel and AMD APUs and make AMD's share of cheaper cards count for less.

Factor of 10 is roughly in line with the Steam hardware survey, where Nvidia is 86% and AMD is 8.2%, so he might just be quoting that.
