That sounds fair enough for a tiered storage layer. The cache on a raid controller is somewhat concentrated though, more of a journal so all writes to all drives would go through that area which is why write speed is critical (the controller can't say a block is written until it is safely written *somewhere*, ideally to redundant controllers). For a PC RAID card it would work, but my time in enterprise storage makes me think in terms of the demands of a petabyte of disks being hit by thousands of users. In fairness that probably wasn't what was meant by our noodly monarch

Our use case is slightly different in that each cache device would only have a max of about 30TB of raw storage that we would be writing through to ( we use the SSD as write cache as well as read cache / metadata store ) on an individual HCI node , so the writes are probably a little less concentrated and ultimately the rate determining step for throughput would be speed at which we could de-stage to the capacity tier in a sustained write situation. The burst performance is very much dependant on the speed of that write cache though - going from SATA to NVMe SSD's gave a significant boost!

... and with my next breath I have to say that if Intel had managed the durability they originally claimed then that might be a flyer, but with the very much reduced durability their actual products get I don't think you can get a datacenter friendly 5 year lifespan if you are writing to the stuff constantly as a cache medium.
Optane drives have at least equivalent endurance to the best NAND based drives of similar size but it's not just about that I find them excellent for caches mainly because of the lower latency and consistent performance at lower queue depths.

If you have a use case other than benchmarks that gets high queue depths out of a standard SSD then I'm impressed

Going to buy a 480GB version for sure.

    But.... RGB!
    How come no hatred here?

I'm not fussed, myself, as this very thing would work rather well in my new build.
