That sounds fair enough for a tiered storage layer. The cache on a raid controller is somewhat concentrated though, more of a journal so all writes to all drives would go through that area which is why write speed is critical (the controller can't say a block is written until it is safely written *somewhere*, ideally to redundant controllers). For a PC RAID card it would work, but my time in enterprise storage makes me think in terms of the demands of a petabyte of disks being hit by thousands of users.
