You are quite right - it does come down to individual choice and I suppose if there wasn’t a demand, they wouldn’t be available.

But that demand seems to have been artificially generated and adds nothing to the basic performance of a system.

To my mind, form should follow function, and RGB doesn’t add to the power of a computer.

And besides which - again to my mind - it looks slightly tacky! (like leet speak!)

But if it floats your boat/makes you feel good/improves your game performance/satisfies some creative urge then crack on!

If the MM830 mouse was powered wirelessly while on the pad, then I could be tempted and just switch off the RGB madness.

I think the fake turbo whistle is pointless, when you can get a real turbo on even a cheap car like mine.

Performance, no, but neither does a side panel window, aesthetic colouring, smooth edges, or any number of other styling elements that are part of so many cases these days.
Demand I would also say no, as many of us were putting coloured lights and things in our cases long before RGB came into being. They're just seeing our half-assed attempts with expensive cack components from Maplins or something and doing it to a higher standard.

But form should still follow, which is what the RGB is all about. I'm sure people were just as critical of the first 'black monstrosity' cases that have now become nearly ubiquitous.
For this same reason, car instruments aren't all white - They're red, green, blue, yellow, orange, or often full RGB, these days, and half of them are so overly styled you'd think you were sitting in one of the Transformers™(Robots In Disguise™)... but apparently I'm one of the few who don't like those sorts of cars!!

    Cracking away.
I'm just waiting to find some RGB things that do what I want... which is what led (LED, geddit?) to me making my own in the first place. My new Phanteks build is looking awfully empty and desolate.

You may or may not be aware of the Razer Chroma Workshop. This is a piece of software that games developers are able to use to tap into the lighting that Razer controls. For instance, when I'm playing Orcs Must Die, I can have my RGB lighting signify me of upcoming events, the angle of attacl, or even start pulsating an entirely different colour when my "special attack" is ready.

I currently have the Razer Nommo Chroma speakers, Razer Tiamat RGB headset, Razer Mamba Hyperflux + Firefly, Razer Blackwidow Chroma V2 and the Razer Chroma Hardware Development Kit, all of which adds up to give me an EPIC experience when I play supporting games.

So RGB can, on occasion, be used to actually give me an advantage.

I wasn't aware of that - but then I don't play computer games so it isn't surprising - but if RGB can be used to enhance your hobby, then fair enough! I buy things for my hobbies that aren't strictly essential, but enhance my enjoyment of them.

But for my computing requirements, it is completely superfluous!

Given my custom user title, I'd hope that would make it clear how the first one is merely me mocking the common responses to anything RGB...

In the second one I take personal ownership of the statement, but refer to such owners as 'them', clearly delineating the separation from me and thus indicating that I am definitely not part of that demographic!!
My tastes are more 80s anyway, so think Knight Rider, Airwolf and clamshell Tricorders off Star Trek...

    £80 for a mouse mat??

    BAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!

    Edit!!

It does not even do some sort of wireless charging either. LOL.

The RGB LED strips actually don't cost that much in Asia,so the markup on this must be very nice for CM.

Re: Cooler Master MP860 dual sided RGB mousemat launched

Can't believe they'd implement a requirement for a USB connection for something as ridiculous as RGB on the mousemat without offering anything practical like a pass-through (for your mouse) or wireless charging.

That's something I imagine Logitech would think of doing.... but not necessarily the likes of CM or Razer.
