Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will depart.
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;
may the name of the Lord be praised.
So they've given me ray tracing, what component is going to magically stop working with this update I can not avoid?
The Lord gaveth Windows 10 for free. The Lord made Windows 10 break things with regular plagues (updates). The Lord in His wisdom then took away the ability to boot directly into safe mode.
Just for background, the quote is from the book of Job where God makes a bet with the Devil to see how far he can push Job by basically taking everything from him bit by bit.
Probably including all the marketable metadata he can suck from everything that passes through Job's Windows 10 machine.
It is just an un-needed api, i ain't no coder though i'd guess the api's feature set could have just been ported over into Dx12. Nevermind, it'd seem it is integrated itno DX12

............where is the Red Team in the wake of all these real time ray tracing phenomena
The Lord took my sight.
Installed update and my monitor won't display anything in the Windows environment. GPU driver issue, certainly.

They have it in development, it is opensource alongside Vulcan
Interesting video about Ray Tracing by AdoredTV on YT.

Worth a watch if you wanna learn more about it
Technically speaking i can't see any reason why DXR wouldn't work with Radeon as it's just another form of a regular compute workload, what the performance would be like is another question entirely though, I'm not even sure we have any performance figures for how any (consumer and/or professional) cards from either manufacture perform real-time ray tracing when using Vulkan (OpenGPU) let alone DXR.
It'll be interesting to see how AMD cards compare with Nvidia when DRMSS is turned off in both DirectX (DXR) and/or Vulkan.
Wouldn't it be hilarious if AMD cards worked better with ray tracing than the new Nvidia cards...
I hope AMD can refresh their GPUs to make them less toasty as mine is incredibly noisy to the point of stupidity.
Without dedicated hardware it may not work well, i guess that Microsoft just prepared a middle-ware API, so it will only abstract the hardware capabilities. Therefore, yes you will run it on any hardware that is compatible. It may even run on any hardware, but the performance figures wont be nice for cards without dedicated circuits which seems obvious.
Having the API seems to be a big leap towards feature adoption. That;s good, as the feature itself seems to ease the graphic development and in the same time increase graphic immerse. It will probably requires additional circuits to resolve it, but in the end we will benefit someday.
And yes, the price for RTX is idiotic, I hope the red team will come with their open implementation which will become a standard.
This is a new API which really needs new hardware to drive it, a fresh start in graphics.
Who probably has the most experience in ray tracing? That is probably Intel. If they are on the ball, we should expect a ray tracing card from them. They seem to be bringing their B-game at best atm though, so I'm expecting the ball to be dropped.

Edit:
Sounds like Intel use a lot of Knights Ferry cards in a cloud to do 1280x720: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVZDH15TRro
My Vega56 is really rather quiet, but then the card so big I had to remove some drive bays from the case to get it to fit.

It will probably work really badly, IIRC i watched a YouTube video that ran that Stormtrooper demo on something like a 1080, 2080 and something else and the 1080 was getting around the 5-6fps mark, how much of that is down to the way Nvidia typically designed older gen cards, specifically off-loading some of the scheduling tasks to the CPU, and the new way of doing things WRT ray tracing is another question.
If current gen AMD cards can achieve even half the FPS that a 2080 can without DLSS being turned on I'd be impressed.
Last time I checked 6 months ago AMD cards were slower than Nvidia ones using the software fallback layer, despite according to AT the AMD cards having "intermediate" hardware support. The issue is DXR has been developed with Nvidia to a degree AFAIK,so I think AMD really needs to push, otherwise even if their cards are better than Pascal,it won't be reflected in benchmarks.
