I don't have a NAS because, I have no need for one.

Yes - it acts as my fileserver, mailserver and occasionally web server.

Re: QOTW: Do you own a NAS device?

I have toyed with it as I do have a number of computers at home on a network, and storage is at a premium on a couple of them. The reality though is I don't need to share and run apps remotely or host web pages etc. so a NAS would be overkill. I could save a lot of money by just having a networked external hdd connected to my router via usb for simple shared file storage.

Re: QOTW: Do you own a NAS device?

Nope, too loud, expensive, and underpowered. I just reuse my old desktop to provide network services, I don't get a slick WebUI, but I prefer SSHing in anyway.

Well - that is a NAS in the same way that my Fedora based ITX system is a NAS.

(unless the question was only concerned with the loud, expensive (and sometimes) underpowered ready built systems - in which case my answer would have neen a resounding 'no' for the same reasons as yours.)

Same for me, by the narrow off the peg definition then no. But I do have a combined file and media server that I built myself.

Supermicro 1u short running freenas as my home nas. It's a double backed up horde of our family photos. Serves as a home dev server as well

Re: QOTW: Do you own a NAS device?

I thought of buying one some time ago for backup purpose but then I built a cheap pc with old parts and just minor upgrades. Not regretting the choice.

I have a stack of old N36L and N54L MicroServers at home, mostly running FreeNAS, as well as a plethora of more recent models at client sites doing everything from data backup, file server, address book, database host etc.

The last ready to go NAS appliances that I bought were the Buffalo Terastation Pro and Terastation Live ~ 10 years ago.

Re: QOTW: Do you own a NAS device?

Yes, an 8 year old LG N2R1D with a 2TB drive in 1 of it's bays. It's not fancy, didn't cost a fortune at the time but provides a shared resource for photos and other backups.

    Yep, a QNAP 251+ with a pair of 4TB drives in RAID1.

Also have a IW-MS04 box running a 3770T with 16GB and 20TB of HDDs hanging off a LSI MegaRAID card as a home server.
