Re: QOW: Which mobile phone do you use?

I'm using the Samsung Galaxy S8. Given the annoying camera issues I've only recently started having (the focus on the phone gets stuck and you need to tap the phone to get it to refocus properly), I'd rather have a different phone.

Given the issues with the Pixel phones, I'm not sure that I could really use one of them either, which effectively means, to replace my phone going forward, I'm going to have to save up the money and buy one outright, rather than getting one on contract (as the contract options are rather limited at my telco).

Glad my genius is finally noted.

Small, really tiny problemette, a sort-of technical flaw in my masterplan .... I'm teetotal. Therefore, not much time spent in pubs.

Damn. Now, where'd the wife tidy my drawing board to? Ah, got it. Behind the vacuum cleaner. I'll take that asca hint.

Re: QOW: Which mobile phone do you use?

Got a Pixel 3 just after release. Vodafone Australia had a pre-order deal for the phone on a plan that cut the plan price by $9/mth whilst giving extra data. Phone itself is pretty nice and I've luckily not had any of the reported issues.

Was using the Huawei P9 before that for two years. Still a decent phone but despite it being a previous flagship phone, it's stuck on Android Nougat (v7) and the battery management was a little funky.

Nokia 808 PureView. Chose it because I was tired of not having a good camera around when the good opportunities for photos came up. That was back in 2014, when the 808 was already a couple years old and the platform was already burning. But I knew that and was okay with it. Wasn't looking to run a thousand apps.

I'd rate it 4 out of 5 stars, with the consideration that the platform has burnt. Great pictures, great DAC, OLED screen that looks great, if a bit low-res, replaceable battery, expandable storage.

I'll have to upgrade when 3.5G is disabled, but I doubt I will until a couple months before that.

Re: QOW: Which mobile phone do you use?

I got a galaxy s2 a loooong time ago but found that I didn't really use it so haven't upgraded to anything. I don't even know what I'd upgrade to if I did, Xiaomi note 5/6 seem to be pretty cost effective for at the low end, but then there are the one plus models and higher end phones after they're dropped in price that can also be tempting if I were to use it more. Particularly for a camera that's always on you, I haven't really taken pictures in the last decade which is kind of a shame to not look back on your memories. But yeah, currently not a high priority.

Re: QOW: Which mobile phone do you use?

To paraphrase my answer of 22/04/17 when this question was last posed: Motorola G 4G (XT1039). Had it since 26/12/14 and when it gives up the ghost, I'll not be spending any more than £150 to £200 tops on it's replacement, whatever the best value make & model is at the time. I don't need it to do anything beyond texting, a couple of hours worth of internet access a week (for bus journeys home from work) and maybe 2 or 3 voice calls a month.

Re: QOW: Which mobile phone do you use?

Google Pixel 128Gb. Got the latest OS, got the latest camera with night mode. Does everything really well. Paid £200 early this year and can't see myself upgrading until at least 2020 given how happy I am with it. Also got a warranty replacement on my second hand purchase as it developed a motherboard fault causing random reboots. New phone is in mint condition as a result (it was brand new, with original OS install circa original release with intact seal). Not as light as the Nexus 5, but 100% the best phone and camera phone I've ever had. Love the grippy official cases too, which I picked up for £10 on Ebay

Pixel 2 XL, best phone I have ever used. Don't see any reason to change.

Re: QOW: Which mobile phone do you use?

    LG G5

(with addon camera grip adding ~+50% battery capacity)

Seemingly the last western flagship phone with a user replaceable battery, a feature that has saved my bacon on several occaisions.

I'm loath to replace it at all to be honest, as performance-wise it's more than fine and it has a recent fresh battery installed. But the OLED display is degrading and has several blotches of washed-out high brightness areas recently.
Maybe new phone time or attempting a screen replacement, not sure yet

But it seems even if replaceable batteries are a rarity, phones with decent capacity batteries are available if you import from China, which i may be doing for my next phone...

Wileyfox swift 2 that I got as a big discount on due to scratch on back from Amazon. I can't afford to replace but to be honest it's good enough. It's made me realize the £300ish I used to spend on new phones was wasted.
    Trust

Re: QOW: Which mobile phone do you use?

I recently upgraded from a Galaxy S4 Mini to an Xperia Z5 Compact. The new phone is unfortunately larger and heavier (which I occasionally notice) and some aspects of the UI bother me at times (possibly they're tweakable, haven't tried), but I got used to it. On the plus side battery lasts longer (3 days vs. 2 days on the S4 Mini). It also has better hardware and a newer OS, which has its minor benefits. I don't use the phone much, and only thought of upgrading the old one because on a trip abroad I found that browsing with it was a pain. Normally I only use it as a phone and for WhatsApp, which worked fine before. I occasionally (though rarely) also use the camera, and I guess the Sony's better camera will make a difference.
