A 3500+ mb/cpu rig not-overclocked is superior in all scenarios I use would ever use (like who plays doom3 in 640x480). I dont see it as a good solution when there are very reasonable deals on AMD 3500+ upgrades (thanks komplett!)
I dont know what ones you read but a Dothan at 2.3Ghz almost equals an FX-55 in frames per second. They are easy to overclock.

I ve read a few, most say its amazing performance but not worth it yet given the high prices. Also you cant run this totally silent it still requires a fan and its got problems with HT. Alot of the reviews compared the M oc'd with unOc'd AMD chips. Yes its a great story but if you look at more reviews youl see that actually it gets beaten by AMD 3500/3800+ (OC'd) this is a much cheaper solution. Also still too expensive but def. one to watch!
