Re: Core Google smartphone apps to include adverts for first time

My reaction to this won't surprise any regulars.

First, I regard ANY ads as intrusive. This started wjth junk through the door, which mercifully has more of less stopped. Why? This thread exemplifies why - it's cheaper, and probably more effective, to do it electronically

Second it's Google. What did you expect. They can no more deny what they are then a dung beetle .... though the dung beetle has far nicer habits.

Third, I've ignored smartphones until about 2 weeks ago when a friend gave me his old one 'to try". I still haven't got around to adding any credit (PAYG, obviously) and this kind of thing serves to remind me just why I never had one before. It also brings me VERY close to just gkving it back, wjth my thanks for the offer.

So time to install those ROMs with all bloatware removed?

I was already considering Windows Launcher and switching to the core MS apps for my next Android phone. If ever there was a way for Google to push me towards Microsoft....

Re: Core Google smartphone apps to include adverts for first time

And so it begins... Google taking it's 'monopolistic' position to force adverts onto our phones, how much you want to bet they'll utilise tracking location etc too... to be fair it's taken far longer than I expected.

Was thinking about getting a new phone with android, now seriously thinking about just biting the bullet and paying more for an apple iphone... seriously never thought I'd say that as I think they're excessively overpriced. Might go see what my options are for a lineage os rom based phone...

I'm sure we all love the irony in that Google has been pushing for better mobile data speeds etc and the ultimate response is them adding in more locations where adverts can pop up which in turn waste or bandwidth etc... I don't pay for data on my mobile so it can be wasted on adverts...

How long until we get 'voice ads' with every google home enquiry... I give it a year based on this.

Re: Core Google smartphone apps to include adverts for first time

Wonder if this is a response to AD blockers? I've always been hesitant to use them as I feel websites/app makers should be paid for their work however I recently crumbled after I realised I spent more time looking at ads than playing some games on my phone. Created a pihole using a raspberry pi 1 I had kicking around and it has transformed things (I only use it from my phone so Hexus still benefits on my PC). You can't block ads that are part of the feed you use, can you - Its all the same server address. Guess its time to stop using Google Now as its just not worth it any more...
    Trust

Weird because I don't see any ads built into windows 10, there's some in some games and other 'metro' apps you optionally download but the core OS and core MS programs like mail and calendar don't seem to have any that I can see (currently)..

You could argue the junk they stick in the start menu on a fresh install is ads but while I don't like it it's hardly anything to worry over.

Re: Core Google smartphone apps to include adverts for first time

The only part of this that surprises me is the comments like "so it begins".

This is not the thin end of the wedge, this is halfway down the track.

The thin end was using your smartphone to know where you were and who/what you were interested in to sell ads. This is the next step, controlling not just the data to show what ads will work but also owning the best "billboards" on the phone to display them.

How long before video ads on the lock screen like those at the start of YouTube videos.
