It *was* mid range, it is now quite an old card which sold in huge quantities and if on a shoestring could be sourced second hand.
The RX 580 isn't bad either, a factory overclock RX480 (and I believe most of them were) is faster than a stock 580 so would be fine. I suspect my son's factory overclock RX 570 8GB would play it well enough as well.
Quite, my wife can blow the cost of an RX580 on each tyre on one of her cars, and a set of brake pads is the cost of that quad core even fitting them myself. Doing track days, these things are consumable.
I have been known to complain about the cost of hardware given I have 4 PCs for a family of gamers to maintain, but having to upgrade a rig to play a game does sometimes happen. OFC if that game turns out to be rubbish, then that is quite poor. Just read the reviews, and decide how much you want it. If shiny graphics is a big part of the game, then that's a red flag for me personally.
I had to upgrade my 386-40 to a 486-33 to play DooM back in the day so this is hardly new, and they were real pounds then
I shudder to think how much Elite Dangerous has cost me to get smooth VR gameplay.
