I really don't get this. 5.99 for old content just seems farcical. Plus I can see them eventually putting new content behind this paywall 'forcing' people who still subscribe to the TV licence to pay extract to see content when first available (or to wait). Also hiding old content paid for by the TV Licence (ignoring licencing revenue streams) behind a paywall is moronic. I put this idea on a par with Brewdog's idea to launch a beer related video streaming service...
Haven't met anyone yet who would subscribe to this, or is in favour of it! Way to go Beeb...

Slightly unfair there. Government made big announcement that TV licenses would be free for 'pensioners', and funded this. Government announced it was withdrawing funding for free licenses. Now, when BBC announces they're withdrawing free licenses, it's all the BBC's fault, not the government's?
Also that's not exactly right. The BBC agreed to take on the cost of licenses for pensioners from 2020 when they drew up new terms for the licensing fee and how the bbc could charge for things like catch up tv and that new britbox.

Which considering the well being of an OAP and in some cases the reliance on tv for 'company' is totally wrong imo.

well if they didn't need a tv licence, then the pensions could watch unlimited reruns of the crappy daytime shows that always seem to be on repeat for a fraction of the cost on Squitbox...
Is it right to ask pensioners pay for a service that others pay for? Yes. Should it be full price? probably not... In my defence they do (or at least could use it) far more than those who have to work 9-5
Not sure how they can legally charge a TV license holder for the BBC content? We already own it dont we? Isn't that why we dont pay for iPlayer if we hold a valid TV license
You'd think so, wouldn't you. Licence fee pays for making new content, live TV and repeats for as long as the BBC likes.
Then its turfed off to BBC Worldwide for DVD and external markets where you get to pay again.
Just what we need, another sub. Will very likely not be worth it with the majority of that sort of stuff constantly on repeat on freeview.
The bbc is al lot more than just Tv tho, plus they innovate in broadcasting quite a lot 4k/8k.
As to the pensioners , originally the Gov paid for it and then blackmailed the BBC to accept the cost (1/4 of their revenue) As long as shows still appear on Iplayer for a year, then I'm ok. An awful lot of conetent on other channels is just recycled old BBC shows anyway..
