Very strange, I would expect a Microsoft game to implement their own DXR to lock people into their API rather than locking people into Nvidia's API. Wonder how much money changed hands.

Yup, but Nvidia have probably paid so much to make it an RTX game to make the feature seem 100% fully relevant and absolutely necessary.
Frankly, i would much rather have proper real time water physics and a full implementation of vertex collision mechanics to prevent clipping etc. Ray tracing doesn't add immersion to me if the lighting is done well. But clipped NPCs and objects really ruin it for me.
