Re: QOTW: How soon do you install the latest software updates?

If it ain't broke,Don't fix it!
Shouldn't update unless you are actually experiencing a problem in the first place.
Sometimes updating will break something else that was working fine before.
Look at the mess with Win 10 updates causing blue screens or unbootable system, Look at past BIOS updates on Ryzen that bricked pc's, Look at Nvidia hotfix drivers.

I only update immediately if there is a feature that becomes available or is upgraded via the update, otherwise I wait until I know its stable.

I've seen too many updates brick phones, corrupt previous work or generally just be a nuisance to do otherwise.

Usually as soon as available, but if a busy time working will delay until current batch of jobs is done to be sure. With that I have never had a problem.

Re: QOTW: How soon do you install the latest software updates?

7 days and indeed if i read that an update is problematical then i extend that to 30. I am tired of solving problems created by "Updates". That said, i upload anti-virus updates as soon as they are available.

How soon? As soon as my device manufacturer releases it. But that's a big if.

Re: QOTW: How soon do you install the latest software updates?

If you can update manually. Then I usually backup all the important files and if I run into a problem with an update deleting something important. I just restore it. I have had that happen before where an update deleted some important folders and I didn't bother backing up before the update. After the restart a lot of files got deleted. So now I don't take chances. Backup before an update restart or an update in general. Then update all the software required even if it's not critical.

    For anyone that's interested.

It basically fools Windows into thinking that you're having to pay for bandwidth so it doesnt auto download updates.
It's great if you hate having your PC reboot without your say so.

I don't follow 'best practices' if it breaks I just go back to an earlier backup or I just don't care starting a fresh. Security doesnt bother me too much, I'm a rebel what can I say.

Because there's 50 million different versions of W10 and they can't make their minds up where to put settings I'm using 1903 for these instructions. You also need this version if you are using a wired connection, because previous versions required you to do it in the registry for Wired connections. Wifi has been available from an earlier time.

Settings > Network & Internet > 'Change Connection Properties'
Scroll down to 'Metered Connection' & enable it.

Note: If you're on a laptop and regularly change Wifi Networks you do need to do it for each and every WiFi you connect to. Or if you're on a PC and use a VPN you have to change it for the VPN as well.

The registry method is better in that it sets it for all WiFi/LAN connections. But that's for a separate thread...

Re: QOTW: How soon do you install the latest software updates?

It really depends, usually only when I need it, or when I'm tired of the update pop-ups. When it's automatic I just leave it to do it's thing and don't really think about it. That said I have my windows updates set to be delayed a little so I avoid most early problems.

And how are they ironed out do you think? By releasing a new software update.. so if you wait for the bugs in your latest version to be ironed out you'll never update...

As late as possible. I feel like the current update pace is way fast and is focused only on content and less on quality.

Are you going to post that in a thread? I haven't seen one.

This is a friggin' life saver for me. I'm repeatedly getting utterly screwed by updates.

But my system is very strange in that I'm probably the only person in the world who has to ensure a new PSU comes with a floppy drive power connector.

Re: QOTW: How soon do you install the latest software updates?

Soon as it's available, I just checked for updates manually and it's installing a couple as I type. I've also so far not had major issues with Windows update (including back in the day with Windows Vista which got a lot of hate as I recall). I did prefer to manually choose what updates I want, but win 10 has taken that control away from you.

My graphics card drivers, these days I tend to leave for a while, as I have a GTX 1070 and the latest drivers don't seem to make much of a difference. Same with other drivers... I installed a USB and Sound card driver and it killed both the USB functionality and the sound card playback. But was able to roll it back to the previous version.
